An environmental scan of current mentorship: fostering the next generations in cardiothoracic surgery in the UK.

Objectives: Mentorship is critical to the professional development of junior colleagues in cardiothoracic surgery. Despite its presumed importance and frequent discussion, its impact within cardiothoracic surgery training remains uncharacterised within the UK. We aimed to evaluate mentorship experience and identify gaps in the system of mentorship education.

Clinician differences in attitudes and perceptions on the use of long-acting injectable antipsychotic agents in treating patients with schizophrenia: results from the US DECIDE survey.

Background: Long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAIs) reduce relapses in schizophrenia; however, most clinicians reserve LAIs for nonadherence with oral antipsychotics (OAs) or severe disease.

Methods: US psychiatric clinicians were surveyed regarding their schizophrenia management practices and use of LAIs. Respondents were grouped by LAI use (high [≥ 31% of patients using LAIs], low [≤ 14% using LAIs]; mid not analyzed) and mindset based on their response to "Which of the following best fits the current way you view your use of [LAIs] for your patients with schizophrenia?"

Results: Respondents (n = 380) were distributed across LAI use (106 high, 130 low) and mindset (123 early-use, 88 severity-reserved, 113 adherence-reserved, 56 LAI-hesitant) subgroups.

Changes in S100 calcium-binding protein β (S100β) and cognitive function from pre- to post-chemotherapy among women with breast cancer.

Many patients with cancer experience cancer-related cognitive decline (CRCD). Previous studies have shown that elevated S100β, a calcium-binding protein commonly found in glial cells, can exhibit neurotoxic effects, including disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). We studied changes in S100β levels in patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy, and the relationship to changes in cognitive function.

Plasma cell-free RNA signatures of inflammatory syndromes in children.

Inflammatory syndromes, including those caused by infection, are a major cause of hospital admissions among children and are often misdiagnosed because of a lack of advanced molecular diagnostic tools. In this study, we explored the utility of circulating cell-free RNA (cfRNA) in plasma as an analyte for the differential diagnosis and characterization of pediatric inflammatory syndromes. We profiled cfRNA in 370 plasma samples from pediatric patients with a range of inflammatory conditions, including Kawasaki disease (KD), multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), viral infections, and bacterial infections.

Evaluation of the impact of artificial intelligence-assisted image interpretation on the diagnostic performance of clinicians in identifying pneumothoraces on plain chest X-ray: a multi-case multi-reader study.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted image interpretation is a fast-developing area of clinical innovation. Most research to date has focused on the performance of AI-assisted algorithms in comparison with that of radiologists rather than evaluating the algorithms' impact on the clinicians who often undertake initial image interpretation in routine clinical practice. This study assessed the impact of AI-assisted image interpretation on the diagnostic performance of frontline acute care clinicians for the detection of pneumothoraces (PTX).
