A comprehensive study has determined the incidence of infection with multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MBT) strains in children. It has first revealed the clinical and laboratory manifestations and specific features of an immune system response in children infected with MDR MBT strains. There is new evidence that impaired immunological responsiveness is similar in children infected with drug-resistant MBT strains and in those with drug-resistant tuberculosis.

The paper presents the results of a follow-up of children and adolescents who isolate drug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MBT) strains of those with manifestations of tuberculosis and preserved sensitivity to antibacterial agents. Bacterial isolation in children and adolescents is scanty and multiple. There is a high rate of resistance to isoniazid, streptomycin, and rifampicin.

In the past 3 years, there has been an increasing trend of tuberculosis morbidity among adolescents in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Moreover, the pattern of clinical types has become worse, disseminated and complicated tuberculoses have been more frequently detected. There is a predominance of infiltrative pulmonary tuberculosis occurring mainly in the intact lung with its asymptomatic onset and aptness to lung tissue decay and bacterial excretion.
