Background: Low anterior resection syndrome is pragmatically defined as disordered bowel function after rectal resection leading to a detriment in quality of life. This broad characterization does not allow for precise estimates of prevalence. Method: A multicentre observational study was carried out on 2131 patients operated on for rectal cancer between May 2006 and May 2009.
