Zinc supplementation has been shown to be beneficial to slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the molecular mechanism underpinning this benefit is not well understood. This study used single-cell RNA sequencing to identify transcriptomic changes induced by zinc supplementation.

Purpose: Albinism refers to a group of genetic disorders typically characterized by a loss/reduction of melanin in the hair, skin and eyes of affected patients. Apart from pigment changes, all albinism patients present with foveal hypoplasia and optic nerve misrouting, and have blurred vision. The molecular mechanisms that link this lack of pigment with neural retinal development are poorly understood, with foveal and optic tract development being difficult to model.

The retinal pigmentation pathway in human albinism: Not so black and white.

Albinism is a pigment disorder affecting eye, skin and/or hair. Patients usually have decreased melanin in affected tissues and suffer from severe visual abnormalities, including foveal hypoplasia and chiasmal misrouting. Combining our data with those of the literature, we propose a single functional genetic retinal signalling pathway that includes all 22 currently known human albinism disease genes.

Exploring the choroidal vascular labyrinth and its molecular and structural roles in health and disease.

The choroid is a key player in maintaining ocular homeostasis and plays a role in a variety of chorioretinal diseases, many of which are poorly understood. Recent advances in the field of single-cell RNA sequencing have yielded valuable insights into the properties of choroidal endothelial cells (CECs). Here, we review the role of the choroid in various physiological and pathophysiological mechanisms, focusing on the role of CECs.
