Water-Soluble Polyglycidol-Grafted Ladder Calix Resorcinarene Oligomers with Open Chain and Cyclic Topologies: Synthesis, Characteristics, and Biological Evaluation.

Ladder oligomers containing calixarene skeletons in the main chain-calix[4]resorcinarene (CRA) ladder macromolecules with open chain and cyclic macromolecules with double ring-like (Noria-type) topologies-bring particular research attention as functional materials with various applications. However, there is still a remarkable lack of studies into the synthesis of fully water-soluble derivatives of these interesting macromolecules. Research on this topic would allow their bio-based research and application niche to be at least revealed.

Prediction of Poor Outcome Using the Urea to Albumin Ratio in Thoracic Empyema.

Purpose: The prognostic performance of urea-to-albumin ratio (UAR) has been assessed in various pulmonary and nonpulmonary conditions, but never in thoracic empyema. Therefore, our aim was to determine whether this marker has the ability to predict outcome in such patients.

Methods: A single-center retrospective study was conducted in a Clinic of Thoracic Surgery at a University Hospital between January 2021 and October 2023.

Optogenetic Inhibition of the Cortical Efferents to the Locus Ceruleus Region of Pontine Tegmentum Causes Cognitive Deficits.

Background: The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) is synaptically coupled to locus ceruleus (LC) located in the pontine tegmentum. The LC supplies norepinephrine (NE) to most of the central nervous system (CNS) via an elaborate efferent network. NE release in the cortex and various limbic structures regulates arousal, memory processes, adaptive behavior and cognitive control.

Urea to Albumin Ratio Is an Excellent Predictor of Death in Patients With Complicated Intra-Abdominal Infections.

The urea to albumin ratio (UAR) has shown a prognostic value in various clinical settings, however, no study has yet investigated its ability to predict outcome in complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs). Therefore, our aim was to evaluate the association between UAR and mortality in such patients. A single-center prospective study including 62 patients with cIAIs was performed at a University Hospital Stara Zagora for the period November 2018 to August 2021.

Better chance of survival is associated with higher neutrophil CD16 expression in patients with complicated intra-abdominal infections.

Aim: The ability of neutrophil CD16 (nCD16) expression to predict outcome in complicated intra-abdominal infections (cIAIs) has not yet been studied; therefore we aimed to evaluate its potential prognostic value in such patients.

Methods: Between November 2018 and August 2021 a single-center prospective study was performed in the Department of Surgical Diseases at a University Hospital Stara Zagora. A flow cytometry was used to measure the levels of nCD16 before surgery and on the 3rd postoperative day (POD) in 62 patients with cIAIs.
