Genetic polymorphisms and protein levels in vocal fold leukoplakia: a systematic review.

Vocal fold leukoplakia (VFL) has a risk of malignant transformation. Therefore, patients can have symptoms such as dysphonia, vocal strain, difficulty breathing, and dysphagia. Additionally, there is a genetic predisposition that can be associated with genetic polymorphisms.

Cognitive changes in patient living with HIV-AIDS and apolipoprotein-E polymorphism: is there an association?

Patients with HIV-AIDS treated with antiretroviral drugs still have high prevalence of cognitive disorders and many factors are likely to contribute for ongoing neurologic decline such as chronic low-level infection, coinfections with hepatitis B and C and genetic influences, both the virus and the host. Some evidences suggest that the genetic APOE polymorphism may be an associated risk factor. This study aimed to evaluate the association between APOE polymorphisms and cognitive disorders in patients with HIV-AIDS.

3' untranslated region A>C (rs3212227) polymorphism of Interleukin 12B gene as a potential risk factor for Hodgkin's lymphoma in Brazilian children and adolescents.

Interleukin 12 plays an important role in immunoregulation between the T helper 1/T helper 2 lymphocytes and in the antiviral and antitumor immune response. The aim of this study was to investigate the possible association between the interleukin 12B polymorphism rs3212227 and the risk to develop Hodgkin's lymphoma in childhood and adolescents. A total of 100 patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma and a group of 181 healthy controls were selected at random from a forensic laboratory of the University of Pernambuco.

APOE-epsilon4 polymorphism and cognitive deficit among the elderly population of Fernando de Noronha.

Background: Polymorphism of the gene for apolipoprotein E (APOE) is an important risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease. The epsilon4 allele of the APOE gene has been linked with a number of neuropsychiatric illnesses, and also with stress and depression among geriatric populations.

Objective: To identify APOE-epsilon4 polymorphism and correlate this with cognitive deficit among the elderly population of the island of Fernando de Noronha.

Genetic analysis of 13 STR loci in the population from the State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil.

Allele frequencies for 13 short tandem repeats (STR) loci obtained from a sample of 546 unrelated individuals from the State of Pernambuco, northeast Brazil, were studied. This population represents a trihybrid population composed of individuals presenting an admixture of Caucasian, African, and Native American. In the present study, the distributions of the genotypes in the evaluated loci CSF1PO, TH01, TPOX, F13A1, FESFPS, vWA, D16S539, D7S820, D13S317, D18S51, D21S11, D8S1179, FGA are in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium.
