Molecular and cytogenetic studies performed in 305 adult acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) patients enrolled in the gimema (Gruppo Italiano Malattie EMatologiche dell'Adulto) multicentric protocols identified an E2A-PBX1 fusion and/or t(1;19) in 10 patients (3.3%). All had common ALL, were mostly CyIg+ and were CD34/CD13/CD33-.

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to assess the risk of second cancers in patients with hairy cell leukemia (HCL).

Patients And Methods: We investigated the incidence of additional cancers in those patients registered in the nationwide registry of the Italian Cooperative Group for the Study of HCL, asking the cooperating centers for additional information on initial and subsequent therapies and on time and type of second malignancies, if they developed. Here we report the final results of this survey, consisting of 54 cases of second malignancies (excluding nine cases of epithelial skin cancer) which developed in 54 patients of 1,022 with adequate follow-up.

Since the social and financial impact of AML therapy is becoming more and more relevant we analyzed the cost of induction therapy of two different regimens. The first one is part of the widely employed EORTC-GIMEMA AML-10 and consists often days of therapy. The second (FLANG) is a short (three day), Fludarabine, Ara-C, mitoxantrone and G-CSF containing regimen.

Acute myeloid leukaemias (AML) evolving from a myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or secondary to chemoradiotherapy frequently display unfavorable biologic characteristics. This may explain the lower remission rate obtained with conventional chemotherapy. Recently, the association of Fludarabine with intermediate dose Ara-C has produced interesting results particularly in high risk AML patients.
