Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are at high risk for bone fractures, which are associated with high morbidity and mortality. Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) have been linked to an increased risk for fractures in the general population as well as in patients with need for hemodialysis, but studies in patients with CKD are currently missing.

Methods: We performed a population-based observational case-control study exploring a sample of patients with CKD derived from the IQVIATM Disease Analyzer database.

Due to the complexity of the catalytic FeMo cofactor site in nitrogenases that mediates the reduction of molecular nitrogen to ammonium, mechanistic details of this reaction remain under debate. In this study, selenium- and sulfur-incorporated FeMo cofactors of the catalytic MoFe protein component from Azotobacter vinelandii are prepared under turnover conditions and investigated by using different EPR methods. Complex signal patterns are observed in the continuous wave EPR spectra of selenium-incorporated samples, which are analyzed by Tikhonov regularization, a method that has not yet been applied to high spin systems of transition metal cofactors, and by an already established grid-of-error approach.

Introduction: Breast cancer survivors have an increased risk for chronic fatigue and altered gut microbiota composition, both with negative health and quality of life affects. Exercise modestly improves fatigue and is linked to gut microbial diversity and production of beneficial metabolites. Studies suggest that gut microbiota composition is a potential mechanism underlying fatigue response to exercise.

We present a modular and cost-effective gamma ray computed tomography system for multiphase flow investigations in industrial apparatuses. It mainly comprises a Cs isotopic source and an in-house-assembled detector arc, with a total of 16 scintillation detectors, offering a quantum efficiency of approximately 75% and an active area of 10 × 10 mm each. The detectors are operated in pulse mode to exclude scattered gamma photons from counting by using a dual-energy discrimination stage.
