This document contains additional information for the production of activated carbons (AC) and carbon foams (CF) from agroindustrial wastes, orange peel (OP) and sugarcane bagasse (SCB). In particular, a set of data is presented for the characterization of carbonaceous structures (AC and CF) and their application in the removal of metallic ions contained in polluted waters. The adsorbent materials were obtained combining chemical and physical activation processes.

Therefore, in the present work, with the aim of treating and reducing the pollution caused by heavy metal ions (Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu), activated carbons (ACs) were synthesized from sugarcane bagasse (SCB) and orange peel (OP) by means of physical - chemical activation method in an acid medium (HPO 85 wt%) followed by an activation at high temperature (500 and 700 °C). Thereafter, these materials were used to produce carbon foams (CF) by the replica method and to evaluate their adsorbent capacity for the removal of heavy metals from synthetic water.

The onion crop with brackish irrigation but accompanied by halophytes is productive, so halophytoremediation is an excellent agronomic proposal for areas where there is poor quality water used for irrigation.

The adsorption of non-biodegradable organic matter measured as chemical oxygen demand (COD), color and heavy metals from leachate on activated carbon (AC) prepared in acid media from Guadua amplexifolia bamboo has been studied. In addition, the computation of kinetic parameters during the adsorption process as well as the most probable mechanisms was determined.

The modification of the starches extracted from rice beans both with and without hydrothermal treatment was evaluated via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopy. SEM indicated that the starch granules of rice beans exhibit wide variation in granule shape, showing the greatest size and modification of the surface when extracted with ethanol. It was found that the extraction solvent had no significant effect on the onset (T) and peak (T) temperatures of the starch, whereas hydrothermal treatment of rice beans decreased the T, T and ΔH of the starch.
