Geographical, ethological, temporal and ecological barriers can affect interbreeding between populations deriving from an ancestral population, this progressively leading to speciation. A rare case of incipient speciation currently occurs between Drosophila melanogaster populations sampled in Zimbabwe (Z) and all other populations (M). This phenomenon was initially characterized by Z females refusing to mate with M males.

Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) is a powerful tool for detecting lipids in tissue sections, with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) and desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) as its key ionization techniques. In this study, we examine how MALDI compares with state-of-the-art DESI ionization in identifying lipids in heterogeneous samples, specifically atherosclerotic plaques. Carotid plaques (n = 4) from patients undergoing endarterectomy were snap-frozen, stored at -80°C, and then sectioned for MSI analysis and H&E staining.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is an alternative to study ex vivo the characteristics of candidates, but most MS studies are complicated by the pharmacologic doses injected and the dissection of regions to study candidate biodistribution. In this study, we tested the ability of a triple quadrupole analyzer (TQ LC-MS/MS) to quantify low concentrations of a validated precursor of a radiotracer targeting the DAT (LBT-999) in dissected regions.

Resolving power increases are achieved by extending the effective ion path length from 47 m to greater than 200 m. Path length increases are achieved through containment of ions within the analyzer for up to = 5 passes using a pulsed deflection electrode.
