Diesel contamination of farming soils is of great concern because hydrocarbons are toxic to all forms of life and can potentially enter the food web through crops or plants used for remediation. Data on plant ability to uptake, translocate and accumulate diesel-derived compounds are controversial not only due to the probable diverse attitude of plant species but also because of the lack of a reliable method with which to distinguish petrogenic from biogenic compounds in plant tissues. The purpose of this study was to set up a GC-MS-based protocol enabling the determination of diesel-derived hydrocarbons in plants grown in contaminated soil for assessing human and ecological risks, predicting phytoremediation effectiveness and biomass disposal.

Purpose: We evaluated the effects of cystic fibrosis (CF) carrier screening on birth prevalence trends and newborn screening (NBS) efficiency by comparing two Italian regions; carrier screening was performed in one region (eastern region (ER)) and not in the other (western region (WR)).

Methods: Annual births of infants with CF, NBS false-positive results, NBS uncertain diagnoses (borderline sweat chloride (BSC)), carrier tests performed, and carriers detected were monitored during the 1993-2013 period.

Measurements And Main Results: A total of 259 newborns with CF were detected.

Although drought is an increasing problem in agriculture, the contribution of the root-associated bacterial microbiome to plant adaptation to water stress is poorly studied. We investigated if the culturable bacterial microbiome associated with five grapevine rootstocks and the grapevine cultivar Barbera may enhance plant growth under drought stress. Eight isolates, over 510 strains, were tested in vivo for their capacity to support grapevine growth under water stress.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the results of salvage surgery in squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. In the period 1983-1998, 127 patients consecutively underwent surgical treatment. Of these, 80 cases had not been treated previously (Group I), while 47 patients had come under our observation after radiotherapy alone or other treatment had failed (Group II).
