Introduction: Population risk for neural tube defects (NTDs) can be determined using red blood cell (RBC) folate. However, a paucity of biomarker and surveillance data among non-lactating, non-pregnant women of reproductive age (NPWRA) from Africa limits accurate assessment. Our study assessed folate and vitamin B12 status among non-lactating NPWRA and predicted population risk of NTDs in Tanzania.

Academic Abstract: Humans frequently engage in mental time travel, reflecting on the past and anticipating the future. Although these processes may seem similar, research documents systematic differences between retrospection and prospection. We propose a conceptual framework to organize and explain these differences based on three axiomatic temporal asymmetries: The past occurs before the future; the past is more certain than the future; and the past is less controllable than the future.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral complications following cardiac arrest (CA) pose significant challenges globally, prompting research on sodium-ß-hydroxybutyrate (SBHB) as a potential treatment for brain injury in a swine model.
  • In an experiment with 20 adult swine, CA was induced, followed by 5 minutes of resuscitation, after which animals received either SBHB infusion or a control solution for 12 hours.
  • Results showed that SBHB infusion led to lower plasma biomarkers of brain injury and increased sEEG amplitude, indicating potential protective effects against cerebral damage after resuscitation.
