Background: Inorganic ultraviolet filters such as titanium dioxide nanoparticles are frequently used in sunscreens. Numerous toxicological studies in vitro and in vivo have been conducted using pristine standard reference nanomaterials of these inorganic filters. While convenient, this approach is not realistic because the complex environment of sunscreen formulations could change the physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles and lead to vastly different toxicological outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Patients with head and neck tumors undergoing free flap reconstructions are at high risk of postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE), prompting a review of anticoagulation practices and the use of subcutaneous heparin in this study.
  • A systematic review included 15 studies, revealing VTE rates between 0% and 9.6%, while a six-year analysis at the institution showed a low VTE rate of 0.76% among 393 patients receiving heparin.
  • The study concluded that administering 5000 units of subcutaneous heparin every 8 hours is effective in minimizing VTE and maintaining a comparable rate of surgical site hematoma, suggesting its routine use may be beneficial.

Monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) has emerged as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease (AD) due to its involvement in the synthesis of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in reactive astrocytes, which inhibits neuronal activity. Suffruticosol B (Suf-B), isolated from Paeonia lactiflora, is one of the resveratrol oligomers. Although resveratrol oligomers have demonstrated neuroprotective effects, it remains unexplored whether Suf-B exerts therapeutic effects on AD by targeting MAO-B.

Objectives: Older adults often experience more fragmented and less restful sleep than younger individuals. However, the mechanisms in the brain that underlie these phenomena have been rarely studied. The aim of this study was to identify the differences in global brain network properties between older adults with good and poor sleep quality and to explore the relationship between these network properties and symptoms of insomnia.

Background: Pneumococcal disease (PD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in young children in Asia and globally. Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) have significantly reduced the burden of PD when included in pediatric national immunization programs (NIPs). This study estimates the clinical and economic burden of PD due to serotypes contained in different PCVs in children aged < 5 years in eight Asian countries/territories.
