Liquid-liquid phase separation driven by charge heterogeneity.

Despite the intrinsic charge heterogeneity of proteins plays a crucial role in the liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) of a broad variety of protein systems, our understanding of the effects of their electrostatic anisotropy is still in its early stages. We approach this issue by means of a coarse-grained model based on a robust mean-field description that extends the DLVO theory to non-uniformly charged particles. We numerically investigate the effect of surface charge patchiness and net particle charge on varying these features independently and with the use of a few parameters only.

Melting Behavior of Compression Molded Poly(ester amide) from 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid.

PEA 46 is a biobased polymer with promising properties for sustainable packaging applications, which can be obtained via polymerization of a furan 2,5-dicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) derivative and a diol monomer containing internal amide bonds (46 amido diol). In the literature, PEA 46 showed a complex series of thermal transitions during DSC scans. For this reason, in this initial exploratory study PEA 46 was subjected to compression molding and the melting behavior of film samples was investigated with parallel DSC and WAXS analyses.

Rituximab versus placebo for chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy: a randomized trial.

Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) often requires prolonged ongoing treatment to prevent worsening. The efficacy of rituximab in preventing worsening after the discontinuation of immunoglobulin therapy in CIDP patients was assessed. In this randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, conducted at seven Italian hospitals, CIDP patients under immunoglobulin therapy were assigned to receive either rituximab (1g on days 1, 15, and 180±7) or placebo.

Olive mill wastewater: From by-product to smart antioxidant material.

Olive mill wastewater (OMWW) is a byproduct of olive oil extraction that represents a critical environmental concern due to its potential adverse effects on ecosystems. Given these premises, spray-dried microparticles were designed and developed using maltodextrins as carriers to encapsulate OMWW bioactive compounds. The microparticles were manufactured using an easily scalable and sustainable spray-drying process.

Frailty and Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia: A Single Center Study.

During the time-course of cognitive decline, Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) may arise, negatively impacting the outcomes. The aim of this single center, longitudinal study was to evaluate the correlation between frailty and BPSD in a population of older patients with dementia. BPSD were classified into three clusters: "mood/apathy" (depression, apathy, sleep disturbances, appetite disturbances), "psychosis" (delusions, hallucinations, and anxiety), and "hyperactivity" (agitation, elation, motor aberrant behavior, irritability, disinhibition).
