This article measures the impact of fostering on children's outcomes in Niger. We estimate a simultaneous equations model with three outcomes for children (school attendance, hours of market work and hours of domestic work) and a treatment variable (fostering). Nonlinearity provides identification by functional form of the causal effect of fostering.

COVID-19-associated acute kidney injury patients treated with renal replacement therapy in the intensive care unit: A multicenter study in São Paulo, Brazil.

Introduction: Multicenter studies involving patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) associated with the disease caused by the new coronavirus (COVID-19) and treated with renal replacement therapy (RRT) in developing countries are scarce. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the demographic profile, clinical picture, risk factors for mortality, and outcomes of critically ill patients with AKI requiring dialysis (AKI-RRT) and with COVID-19 in the megalopolis of São Paulo, Brazil.

Methods: This multicenter, retrospective, observational study was conducted in the intensive care units of 13 public and private hospitals in the metropolitan region of the municipality of São Paulo.

Surgical presentation of abdominal tuberculosis: a protean disease.

Background/aims: The incidence of tuberculosis is rising again in the Western world, due to the emergence of new groups of patients at risk. This paper intends to describe the various patterns of surgical presentation of abdominal tuberculosis in an industrialized country.

Methodology: A retrospective study was made of all patients admitted to our surgical institution, and in whom a diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis was established.

Duodenal tuberculosis presenting as acute ulcer perforation.

Gastrointestinal tuberculosis (TB) is rare, but its incidence is increasing in industrialized countries because of the growing numbers of individuals at risk for TB. Herein, we report the exceptional case of a young, HIV-negative, African refugee who presented with acute perforation of an isolated duodenal tuberculous ulcer. Clinical patterns of duodenal TB are discussed.
