Is Intracranial Pressure Monitoring After Open Cranial Procedures Associated With Outcome?

Introduction: It is unclear if intracranial pressure monitoring (ICPM) after open cranial procedures (craniotomy or craniectomy) (OC) for traumatic brain injury is associated with mortality. We hypothesized that ICPM placed early after OC was associated with lower mortality compared to no ICPM or delayed ICPM placement.

Methods: Using 2020-2021 data from the American College of Surgeons Trauma Quality Improvement Program, patients ≥16 y from level 1 and 2 trauma centers who underwent OC were divided into two groups: ICPM placed within 72 h of OC (early) and no ICPM or ICPM placed after 72 h (none/delayed).

Clinical Experiences Using Family Based Treatment for Eating Disorders.

Objective: Despite the availability of several evidence-based treatments for eating disorders (EDs), including Family-Based Treatment (FBT), therapist drift from evidence-based treatments in real-life clinical settings is common. This study explores clinicians' use of FBT techniques and identifies clinician-reported barriers to their use in real-world settings.

Methods: Clinicians (N = 54) who self-identified as using FBT for EDs were recruited through social media, professional listservs, and mental health provider databases.

Expanded Endoscopic Endonasal Clipping of a Giant Cavernous Carotid Aneurysm.

Cavernous carotid aneurysms are typically small, asymptomatic, and often do not require treatment. We present the case of a 59-year-old woman, a 3-pack-a-day smoker, who presented with the primary complaint of left retro-orbital pain, left complete ophthalmoplegia, left-sided blindness, and right abducens palsy. Imaging revealed a giant right cavernous carotid aneurysm, which had expanded to the contralateral cavernous sinus wall and superiorly through the diaphragm sellae.

Longitudinal Results From the Nationwide Just ASK Initiative to Promote Routine Smoking Assessment in American College of Surgeons-Accredited Cancer Programs.

Purpose: Persistent smoking after cancer diagnosis causes adverse outcomes while smoking cessation can improve survival. Thus, integration of smoking assessment and cessation assistance into routine cancer care is critical. Aiming for incremental practice change that could be sustained and built upon through future quality improvement (QI) projects, the American College of Surgeons initiated Just ASK in 2022 to increase implementation of smoking assessment among its accredited Cancer Programs.
