Even when the partial differential equation underlying a physical process can be evolved forward in time, the retrospective (backward in time) inverse problem often has its own challenges and applications. Direct adjoint looping (DAL) is the defacto approach for solving retrospective inverse problems, but it has not been applied to deterministic retrospective Navier-Stokes inverse problems in 2D or 3D. In this paper, we demonstrate that DAL is ill-suited for solving retrospective 2D Navier-Stokes inverse problems.

This article examines the material culture of domesticity in late nineteenth-century English convalescent institutions. Convalescent homes drew on powerful Victorian ideas about the physical and moral benefits of "home-like" domestic comfort, which they contrasted with the "institutional" environment of hospitals and the degrading surroundings of urban slums. Administrative records, press accounts, photographs, and patient letters reveal how convalescent homes cultivated temporary home-like environments through architecture, interior decoration, and behavioral expectations and routines.

We used single molecule localization microscopy in live cells to elucidate the molecular organization of cytokinesis proteins and relate it to the constriction rate of the contractile ring. Wild-type fission yeast cells assemble contractile rings by the coalescence of cortical proteins complexes called nodes whereas cells without Anillin/Mid1p (Δmid1) lack visible nodes yet assemble contractile rings competent for constriction from the looping of strands.
