Macroplastic pollution in riparian corridors of urban and pristine mountain streams in Patagonia (Argentina).

Plastic pollution has garnered much more attention in marine environments, while scientific research on freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems has been relatively overlooked. Numerous studies worldwide have highlighted the presence of macroplastics (>2.5 cm) in mountain riverine environments, revealing that even these seemingly pristine ecosystems are not invulnerable to plastic contamination.

Mini-Open Dumps in the Paraná River Floodplain: Local Problems with Global Effects.

The growing production of urban solid waste is a structural problem faced by most cities around the world. The proliferation of mini-open dumps (MOD; small spontaneous open-air waste dumps formed in urban and peri-urban areas) on the banks of the Paraná River is particularly evident. During the historical drought (June-December 2021), we carried out sampling campaigns identifying MODs of the Santa Fe River, a secondary channel of the Paraná River.

However, floating booms are being constructed and deployed in river around the world without rigorously testing its effectiveness. In this study, we tested the effectiveness of a boom under realistic conditions for several configurations and treatments (including "C-shape" and "Slash-shape" configurations).

Fishers' knowledge on a large floodplain river in South America. Contributions for sustainable management of inland fisheries.

Unlabelled: This study presents a comparison between fishers' knowledge and fiscal records about the structure of inland fisheries in the Paraná River (Argentina). First of all, we characterized the fishing population according to the main demographic and economic indicators, identifying two different fishing areas: the northern and southern sections in the lower La Plata basin. Secondly, we carried out a comparative analysis of fiscal fishery records (from two commercial sets: 1930-1984 and 2011-2019) and local fishers' knowledge on inland commercial fisheries (frequency of occurrence and abundance).
