Current Approach to Complications and Difficulties during Transrectal Ultrasound-Guided Prostate Biopsies.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common male malignancies worldwide. It affects middle-aged men (45-60 years) and is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Western countries. The TRUS (trans rectal ultrasound)-guided prostate biopsy has been a standard procedure in prostate cancer detection for more than thirty years, and it is recommended in male patients with an abnormal PSA (prostate-specific antigens) or abnormalities found during digital rectal examinations.

Ultrasound for kidney access in percutaneous nephrolithotomy: a contemporary review.

Nowadays percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is the standard of care for renal staghorn calculus or large (>20 mm) pelvic or caliceal stones, as well as for the failure of other treatment options. This review aims to evaluate the contemporary use of ultrasound imaging in PCNL, by comparing it to conventional fluoroscopy, reviewing data regarding the complication and success rate of nephrostomy tract creation and stone free rate (SFR), as well as data concerning the learning curve for these procedures and cost indicators. The evidence acquired shows that the ultrasound guided access (USGA) is a comparable method with the classic fluoroscopic guided access (FGA), with a similar safety profile, with a significant reduction in radiation exposure, up to radiation free complete PCNL.

Percutaneous implantation of subcutaneous prosthetic ureters: long-term outcome.

Purpose: We have used an extra-anatomic subcutaneous alloplastic ureteral replacement initially to bypass ureteral obstruction secondary to advanced pelvic malignancies in patients with a short life expectancy. Following the encouraging preliminary results, our list of indications has broadened to include complex benign ureteral strictures. We herein report the long-term outcome.

[The repair of voluminous postoperative abdominal wall defects with synthetic mesh].

Important postoperative abdominal wall defects, especially recurrent or multirecidivated ones, are raising multiple problems to the surgeon. We are presenting a homogeneous trial of 209 patients with such lesions, in which the abdominal wall repair was made with different kind of synthetic materials, with good results. In a single case the mesh was rejected, because a silent quiescent infection.

[Surgical treatment of cancer of the thyroid (author's transl)].

The authors report their experience with cancer of the thyroid. Using statistical data from 760 operated cases and present day concept, they consider the difficulties of the diagnosis, the stage of evolution and the treatment in the form of a collaboration between surgery, clinic and nuclear medicine.
