Objectives: Alcoholic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are steatotic liver diseases and major causes of cirrhosis. Only a minority of patients with risk factors develop cirrhosis and genetic cofactors may be important in pathogenesis. Mutations in the Wilson's and α-1-antitrypsin genes are not uncommon and we speculated that they may act as cofactors.

Most of the changes that have been reported are indicators of depletion in the overall genetic diversity of the colony populations. The Sterile Insect Techniques programme of mosquito control that is underway in Northern Sudan uses sterilized males produced from a laboratory-maintained colony population.

Mosquitoes in the Aedes genus have been considered as the reservoir, as well as vectors, since their transovarially infected eggs withstand desiccation and larvae hatch when in contact with water. However, different mosquito species serve as epizootic/epidemic vectors of RVF, creating a complex epidemiologic pattern in East Africa.

The subjects of a recent study in central Sudan, in an area with a low level of Plasmodium falciparum transmission, were 322 individuals who had each presented at one of seven suburban health facilities, complaining of repeated febrile episodes. Although all were found bloodsmear-negative for malarial parasites, all were presumptively diagnosed as cases of malaria and prescribed artemisinin-based combination therapy.
