Background: Child disability, especially as a result of nervous system diseases, affects all aspects of family life, causing extreme emotional and physical exhaustion in parents. However, today there is not enough scientific evidence on the features of development of nonpsychotic mental disorders in parents raising children with cerebral palsy and on the possibilities of using modern physiotherapy methods to correct these conditions and comorbidities. Considering that sanatorium-resort rehabilitation in children with cerebral palsy is accompanied by their parents, it is urgent to optimize clinical and functional approaches to treating mothers with borderline mental disorders with the simultaneous rehabilitation of children in sanatorium-resort conditions.

The incidence rate of functional disorders in the cardiovascular system as well as in the vegetative nervous system was found out to be on the increase in those children with cardial pathology residing in a large industrial centre. Sanatorium-health resort treatment was noted to make for improvement of vegetative regulation of the cardiac activity, enhancement of compensatory-and-adaptive potentialities of the organism, which facts warrant a wider use of health resorts in the rehabilitative treatment of children experiencing additional environmental loads of a large industrial centre.

A favourable effect of sanatorium treatment on the key body functions was found in children with thyroid hyperplasia consequent to environmental pollution due to Chernobyl accident. It is emphasized that balneofactors in the above children should be used in sparing regimens.

Functional systemic changes as compared to pretreatment characteristics served criteria of adaptation in children suffering from cardiovascular diseases. A load test with a single balneological procedure was used. Adaptation and compensation response proved useful as individual test loads to make therapy most efficient.

During sanatorium treatment children with cardiac disturbances developed equilibrium between adrenergic and cholinergic effects on cardiac activity. Vegetative dysfunctions declined. There was a positive trend in glucocorticoid and thyroid conditions.
