Aggravated Systemic Inflammation and Atherogenicity in African Patients Living With Type 2 Diabetes and Hypertension Comorbidity.

Objective: To explore routinely measured markers of systemic inflammation in hypertension (HTN) and type 2 diabetes (T2D) comorbidity, and their association with atherogenicity.

Methods: This study included a total of 70 patients with T2D which were categorised into 2 groups, that is with T2D and with HTN comorbidity (T2D + HTN) (n = 35/group). All measured laboratory parameters were determined using standardised methods.

Background: Globally, the number of older people is rising. As a consequence of greater longevity, an increased burden on both medical and mental health care is expected. As a first step towards developing strategies to provide quality mental health care for this growing population, practitioners need to have a thorough understanding of the composition and needs of these patients.

Normal-pressure hydrocephalus presenting with psychiatric symptoms.

A 62-year-old man presented with a 2-month history of psychiatric symptoms. These were preceded by cognitive deterioration, urinary incontinence and an abnormal gait. A diagnosis of normal-pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) was made, and the patient improved after surgery.

Aided auditory steady-state responses in infants.

Infants with hearing loss routinely receive hearing aids several months before reliable behavioral responses to amplified sound can be observed. This necessitates objective measures to validate hearing-aid fittings. A single report has demonstrated the use of ASSRs to determine aided thresholds in children but data in young infants is still lacking.

An unusual presentation of genitourinary schistosomiasis in a Caucasian woman in the UK.

A young woman who presented with loin pain and pyuria after a prolonged period of investigations and treatment, finally having a nephrectomy for non-functioning kidney, was revealed to have schistosomial infestation with an adult worm in the ureter. Unusually, she only developed bladder manifestations later.
