Blood samples of 212 patients with breast lesions (32 patients had benign lesions and 180 - malignant breast tumors) were analyzed. Benign breast diseases corresponded to fabroadenoma, cyst and diffuse mastopathy. Among those with breast cancer I-IIa stages of the disease was diagnosed in 80 patients, IIb - in 34, IIIa and IIIb stages - in 9 and 38 cases, correspondingly, stage IV was diagnosed in 19 patients.

The authors present information on 44 patients with local breast carcinoma (Stages II and III) who were treated by a new type of operation in the form of radical subtotal resection of the breast and one-stage reconstruction without the use of endoprostheses. The authors describe some scientific and technical problems of the performance of these complicated surgical interventions. In future these operations may become operations of choice for a certain category of patients because they solve both therapeutic and rehabilitation problems.

Studies of local immunity in breast cancer patients were performed in relation to its dependence on tumor levels of estrogen receptors. They demonstrated that progression of breast cancer depends much on the presence of estrogen receptors which occur in 33% of premenopausal and in 68.3% of postmenopausal women; local humoral immunity depends on hormonal presentation of the tumor.

The authors assess the efficacy of phage therapy ofsuppurative and inflammatory complications in oncological patients. A clinical and laboratory analysis has involved 131 patients whose etiotropic therapy consisted of bacteriophages (65 patients) and antibiotics (66). Medicinal phages, manufactured by the Tbilisi Research Institute for Vaccines and Sera, have been administered according to 3 schemes: (1) parallel with antibiotics, (2) after long ineffective antibiotic therapy, (3) phages alone starting from the onset of the purulent complication.
