Proteomic profiling on other primary cicatricial alopecias, such as frontal fibrosing alopecia and lichen planopilaris, have suggested a T helper 1-mediated inflammatory pathway, but in central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA), the protein expression patterns are unknown. In this study, we sought to characterize protein expression patterns in CCCA to identify biomarkers of disease activity that will identify potential therapeutic avenues for treatment. Scalp protein quantification was performed to understand protein expression patterns in affected versus unaffected scalps in CCCA.

Salivary testosterone and cortisol levels in borderline personality disorder before and after a 12-week group dialectical behavior therapy intervention.

Background: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a chronic, debilitating, and difficult to treat condition. BPD has recently been linked to steroid hormone dysregulation and medical conditions characterized by disturbed androgen metabolism. This study aimed to investigate cortisol and testosterone levels in BPD, and changes in hormones following psychological treatment.

NADPH oxidases (NOX's), and the reactive oxygen species (ROS) they produce, play an important role in host defense, thyroid hormone synthesis, apoptosis, gene regulation, angiogenesis and other processes. However, overproduction of ROS by these enzymes is associated with cardiovascular disease, fibrosis, traumatic brain injury (TBI) and other diseases. Structural similarities between NOX's have complicated development of specific inhibitors.

Studies have shown that subjects with psoriasis (PsO) are associated with an increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MetS), diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. In addition, MetS and diabetes are associated with autonomic dysfunction (AD). The aim of this study was to investigate cardiac and sudomotor autonomic function in subjects with PsO and without diabetes.

In August 1990, Saddam Hussein's army invaded Kuwait and consequently the United Nations imposed economic sanctions on Iraq. In 1991, an international military alliance expelled the Iraqi army from Kuwait during a short war. Nevertheless, the economic sanctions remained in place-their removal required that Iraq should destroy its weapons of mass destruction.

Salmonella Typhimurium Co-Opts the Host Type I IFN System To Restrict Macrophage Innate Immune Transcriptional Responses Selectively.

Innate immune inflammatory responses are subject to complex layers of negative regulation at intestinal mucosal surfaces. Although the type I IFN system is critical for amplifying antiviral immunity, it has been shown to play a homeostatic role in some models of autoimmune inflammation. Type I IFN is triggered in the gut by select bacterial pathogens, but whether and how the type I IFN might regulate innate immunity in the intestinal environment have not been investigated in the context of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (ST).

Inhibition of TLR2 signaling by small molecule inhibitors targeting a pocket within the TLR2 TIR domain.

Toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling is initiated by dimerization of intracellular Toll/IL-1 receptor resistance (TIR) domains. For all TLRs except TLR3, recruitment of the adapter, myeloid differentiation primary response gene 88 (MyD88), to TLR TIR domains results in downstream signaling culminating in proinflammatory cytokine production. Therefore, blocking TLR TIR dimerization may ameliorate TLR2-mediated hyperinflammatory states.

The panc 3 score: a rapid and accurate test for predicting severity on presentation in acute pancreatitis.

Goal: The goal of our study was to develop a simple rule that could rapidly identify those at risk for severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) in the ER.

Methods: We identified all published studies reporting risk factors for SAP. We identified 3 risk factors which had been shown to predict SAP.

Health care quality assessment under managed care organizations is usually derived from two sources: (1) consumer satisfaction surveys, and (2) The Health Plan Employer Data Information Set reports. There is little published data regarding physicians' critiques. This study surveyed physicians and office managers as to the quality of healthcare under 10 managed care organizations in the Greater Baton Rouge area.

This paper reviews food (especially cereal) production trends and prospects for the world and its main regions. Despite fears to the contrary, in recent years we have seen continued progress toward better methods of feeding humanity. Sub-Saharan Africa is the sole major exception.

Effect of prostaglandin F2 alpha treatment before norgestomet and estradiol valerate treatment on regression, formation, and function of corpora lutea in beef heifers.

Two experiments were conducted to determine if corpus luteum regression, formation, and function were associated with the decreased calving rate observed in beef females administered PGF2 alpha 5 days before Syncro-Mate B (SMB) treatment. Experiment 1 included 31 beef heifers 11 to 13 months old and experiment 2 included 31 beef heifers 19 to 21 months old. Heifers were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups (control and PGF2 alpha 5 days before SMB treatment).

Effect of interval from melengestrol acetate to prostaglandin F2 alpha on timed and synchronized pregnancy rates of beef heifers and cows.

The objective of this experiment was to determine the optimal interval from the last day of melengestrol acetate (MGA) feeding to prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) treatment on pregnancy rates of beef heifers and cows. All females (149 heifers and 399 postpartum cows) were fed MGA (.5 mg) daily for 14 d and then administered PGF2 alpha (25 mg Lutalyse) 13, 15, and 17 d (Groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively) after the last day of MGA feeding.

Studies on DNA damage and induction of SOS repair by novel multifunctional bioreducible compounds. II. A metronidazole adduct of a ruthenium-arene compound.

A new transition metal complex of the 5-nitroimidazole, metronidazole (1-beta-hydroxyethyl-2-methyl-5-nitroimidazole), has been prepared and its potential use as a hypoxic cell cytotoxic agent examined. The preparation of the complex [(eta6-C6H6)RuCl2(metronidazole)] is described together with its characterization using standard spectroscopic techniques. Electrochemical investigations showed that coordination to the metal centre had not altered the electron affinity of the metronidazole, but kinetic studies using the cyclic voltametric mode demonstrated that the one-electron addition product, the nitro radical anion, had a decreased lifetime, with a half-life of 7.

A novel bifunctional hypoxia-selective compound [Rh2(O2CCH3)4.2C6N3O3H9] has been synthesized and its genotoxic and potential mutagenic effects studied with reference to those of dirhodium tetraacetate (RAc) and metronidazole. The properties of the two functional components have been examined by comparing its oxic genotoxicity, a measure of the DNA damage induced by RAc, with its anoxic genotoxicity by electrochemical reduction, a measure of DNA damage resulting from the combined activity of reduced nitro group intermediates and RAc.

Measurement of gastrointestinal pH profiles in normal ambulant human subjects.

Gastrointestinal (GI) pH has been measured in 66 normal subjects using a pH sensitive radiotelemetry capsule passing freely through the gastrointestinal tract. Signals were recorded with a portable solid state receiver and recording system, enabling unconstrained measurements with normal ambulatory activities for up to 48 h during normal GI transit. Capsule position in the gut was monitored by surface location using a directional detector.
