Objective: We aim to compare the diagnostic accuracy of the different methodologies used in the detection of cell-free human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA in HPV-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma detection using bivariate analysis methods.

Data Sources: Pubmed, Embase, and Scopus were queried using a broad search strategy to search for relevant studies.

Review Methods: Test characteristics were extracted from 33 studies following literature screening, and underwent analyses utilizing a bivariate approach.

Optimal treatment of locally advanced cancer of the larynx is controversial. In this study, we aim to compare outcomes in patients with T3-4N0-1 cancer of the larynx who underwent surgery alone versus surgery followed by radiation therapy (RT). A total of 1820 patients with advanced laryngeal cancer were identified from the national Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database and stratified based on postoperative RT status, and clinical outcomes were compared between these 2 groups.

Background: Frailty is associated with poor outcomes for patients on dialysis; however, dedicated studies among incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are lacking. This study aims to determine the association between frailty and mortality/transfer to hemodialysis (HD) among incident PD patients and identify whether dialysis modality (PD vs. HD) modifies the association of frailty and mortality following dialysis initiation.

Background: The autistic population is rapidly increasing; meanwhile, autistic adults face disproportionate risks for adverse COVID-19 outcomes. Limited research indicates that autistic individuals have been accepting of initial vaccination, but research has yet to document this population's perceptions and acceptance of COVID-19 boosters.

Objective: This study aims to identify person-level and community characteristics associated with COVID-19 vaccination and booster acceptance among autistic adults, along with self-reported reasons for their stated preferences.

Research has demonstrated that autistic individuals have higher rates of police contact, however, research has seldom explored the fundamental reasons for these interactions and how this might vary across international contexts. To remedy this, the Global Autism and Criminal Justice Consortium created and disseminated the Global Criminal Justice Survey. Descriptive statistics of survey respondents with and without police contact were compared to glean differential characteristics.

Purpose: Cancer diagnosis and treatment, including radiation therapy (RT), cause significant patient stress. Mindfulness and social support have been shown to help manage the psychological effects of cancer treatment. The objective of our study was to determine the sociodemographic and clinical factors associated with stress burden in patients receiving RT.

Background: This scoping review aims to review cases of extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) of the larynx to establish best management practices for this rare clinical entity.

Methods: In this paper, we report a case of laryngeal MZL, in accordance with CARE guidelines. We then performed a scoping review according to PRISMA-ScR criteria of published cases of MZL involving the larynx.

Objectives: We describe the development of 3D-printed stents using our digital workflow and their effects on patients enrolled in the lead-in phase of a multi-center, randomized Phase-II trial.

Materials And Methods: Digital dental models were created for patients using intraoral scanning. Digital processes were implemented to develop the mouth-opening, tongue-depressing, and tongue-lateralizing stents using stereolithography.

Consensus-based recommendations are needed to better guide paediatric otolaryngologists in providing standardised care to children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Here we present a unique case of vallecular cyst found during SDB workup in a patient in their middle childhood (6-12 years old). While the patient underwent successful cyst resection, he was noted to have a suspected recurrence 6 months later.

Introduction: Medical errors are an unfortunate certainty with emotional and psychological consequences for patients and health care providers. No standardized medical curriculum on how to disclose medical errors to patients or peers exists. The novel HEEAL (honesty/empathy/education/apology-awareness/lessen chance for future errors) curriculum addresses this gap in medical education through a multimodality workshop.

Importance: Youth with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are more likely to be placed in foster care than other youth. Examining the clinical and sociodemographic characteristics of youth with I/DD in the foster care system is critical for identifying disparities and understanding service needs.

Objective: To produce a population-level analysis of youth with I/DD in foster care that examines differences in rates of foster care involvement based on race, ethnicity, age, and sex.

Importance: The likelihood that an oral cavity lesion harbors occult invasive disease after biopsy demonstrating carcinoma in situ (CIS) is unknown. While de-escalated treatment strategies may be appealing in the setting of CIS, knowing whether occult invasive disease may be present and its association with survival outcomes would lead to more informed management decisions.

Objective: To evaluate rate of occult invasive disease and clinical outcomes in patients with oral cavity CIS.

Infectious risks escalate with complex donning and doffing personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols. Recent studies suggest that PPE donning and doffing behaviors that deviate from protocol during PPE reuse compounded the risks of health care worker (HCW) self-contamination. This study quantified the occurrence of behaviors associated with known risks in PPE use and reuse.

Objectives: Cricothyrotomy is a high-stakes emergency procedure. Because the procedure is rare, simulation is often used to train residents. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires performance of three cricothyrotomies during residency, but the optimal number of training repetitions is unknown.

Introduction: The underlying factors that contribute to early radiotherapy (RT) termination are understudied, especially in the era of hypofractionated treatment regimens. In this retrospective investigation, we examined the characteristics and causes of premature RT terminations in senior adults (>70 years old) with oral cavity (OC) and laryngeal carcinomas.

Methods: Hundred and eighty-eight patients treated with RT ± systemic therapy for OC and laryngeal cancer from 2017 to 2022 were identified.

The development of pseudoaneurysm is an uncommon, life-threatening complication of head and neck microvascular surgery. Only a handful of reports have been published describing microvascular pseudoaneurysms, which usually occur at the arterial anastomosis and present as a pulsatile neck mass or as haemorrhage in case of pseudoaneurysm rupture. Management is highly variable, especially in the acute setting.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how pre-existing health conditions (comorbidities) affect the response to immunotherapy in patients with advanced head and neck cancer (HNC).
  • It analyzed 93 patients, comparing outcomes for those with comorbidities versus those without, finding that patients without comorbidities had significantly better overall and progression-free survival rates and higher tumor response rates.
  • The results suggest that the presence of comorbidities is an important factor to consider when making treatment decisions for HNC patients receiving immunotherapy.

Objectives: Inflammatory reaction to vocal fold injection laryngoplasty with hyaluronic acid (HA) is a rare condition whose optimal management is not established. In this study, we aim to review the presentation of these reactions and outline an approach for evaluation and management.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all patients at our institution who underwent vocal fold injection augmentation with HA during the period extending from August 2018 until October 2022.
