Characterizing Behavioral Effects of Early-Life Stress in an Animal Model of Auditory Processing.

Animal models provide significant insight into the development of typical and disordered sensory processing. Such models have been established to take advantage of physical and behavioral characteristics of specific species. For example, the Mongolian gerbil is a well-established model for auditory processing, with a hearing range similar in frequency to that of humans and an easily accessible cochlea.

Thoracotomy patch repair of large diaphragmatic herniae in a porcine model: a tale of two patches.

Purpose: Congenital diaphragmatic herniae (CDH) may require patch closure in 50% of the cases. We assessed a biologic and composite mesh in a porcine CDH model.

Methods: Left sided thoracotomy was performed in 20 pigs.

Laughter and effective presidential leadership: A case study of Ronald Reagan as the 'great communicator'.

Former United States President Ronald Reagan's use of media and his charismatic connection with viewers earned him the moniker "the great communicator". One aspect of his charisma, the influence of elicited laughter, during a highly critical 5-minute news story by CBS reporter Leslie Stahl during the 1984 US presidential election is examined here. Two experiments examining the effects of audience laughter on perceptions of charismatic leadership are reported.

Impact of Eating a Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet on Cortical Atrophy in a Cross-Section of Amyloid Positive Patients with Alzheimer's Disease: A Small Sample Study.

Background: A carbohydrate-restricted diet aimed at lowering insulin levels has the potential to slow Alzheimer's disease (AD). Restricting carbohydrate consumption reduces insulin resistance, which could improve glucose uptake and neural health. A hallmark feature of AD is widespread cortical thinning; however, no study has demonstrated that lower net carbohydrate (nCHO) intake is linked to attenuated cortical atrophy in patients with AD and confirmed amyloidosis.

Handgrip Strength Is Related to Hippocampal and Lobar Brain Volumes in a Cohort of Cognitively Impaired Older Adults with Confirmed Amyloid Burden.

Background: Strength and mobility are essential for activities of daily living. With aging, weaker handgrip strength, mobility, and asymmetry predict poorer cognition. We therefore sought to quantify the relationship between handgrip metrics and volumes quantified on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

Disparate outer membrane exclusionary properties underlie intrinsic resistance to hydrophobic substances in spp. isolated from surface waters under triclosan selection.

Representative members of surface water microbiota were obtained from three unrelated municipal sites in Oklahoma by direct plating under selection by the hydrophobic biocide triclosan. Multiple methods were employed to determine if intrinsic triclosan resistance reflected resistance to hydrophobic molecules by virtue of outer membrane impermeability. While all but one organism isolated in the absence of triclosan were able to initiate growth on MacConkey agar, only one was able to initiate significant growth with triclosan present.

Platelet-derived growth factor-AB improves scar mechanics and vascularity after myocardial infarction.

Therapies that target scar formation after myocardial infarction (MI) could prevent ensuing heart failure or death from ventricular arrhythmias. We have previously shown that recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-AB (rhPDGF-AB) improves cardiac function in a rodent model of MI. To progress clinical translation, we evaluated rhPDGF-AB treatment in a clinically relevant porcine model of myocardial ischemia-reperfusion.

Candidate Performance and Observable Audience Response: Laughter and Applause-Cheering During the First 2016 Clinton-Trump Presidential Debate.

Raucous audience applause-cheering, laughter, and even booing by a passionately involved electorate marked the 2016 presidential debates from the start of the primary season. While the presence and intensity of these observable audience responses (OARs) can be expected from partisan primary debates, the amount of not just laughter, but also applause-cheering and booing during the first general election debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was unprecedented. Such norm-violating audience behavior raises questions concerning not just the presence, strength, and timing of these OAR, but also their influence on those watching on television, streaming video, or listening to radio.

Lateralization of simulated sources and echoes differing in frequency based on interaural temporal differences.

This study examined listeners' ability to process interaural temporal differences (ITDs) in one of two sequential sounds when the two differed in spectral content. A correlational analysis assessed weights given to ITDs of simulated source and echo pulses for echo delays of 8-128 ms for conditions in which responses were based on the source or echo, a 3000-Hz Gaussian (target) pulse. The other (distractor) pulse was spectrally centered at 1500, 2000, 3000, 4000, or 5000 Hz.

An NLRP3 Mutation Causes Arthropathy and Osteoporosis in Humanized Mice.

The NLRP3 inflammasome plays a critical role in host defense by facilitating caspase I activation and maturation of IL-1β and IL-18, whereas dysregulation of inflammasome activity results in autoinflammatory disease. Factors regulating human NLRP3 activity that contribute to the phenotypic heterogeneity of NLRP3-related diseases have largely been inferred from the study of Nlrp3 mutant mice. By generating a mouse line in which the NLRP3 locus is humanized by syntenic replacement, we show the functioning of the human NLRP3 proteins in vivo, demonstrating the ability of the human inflammasome to orchestrate immune reactions in response to innate stimuli.

Xenobiotic Metabolism in Mice Lacking the UDP-Glucuronosyltransferase 2 Family.

UDP-Glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) conjugate a glucuronyl group from glucuronic acid to a wide range of lipophilic substrates to form a hydrophilic glucuronide conjugate. The glucuronide generally has decreased bioactivity and increased water solubility to facilitate excretion. Glucuronidation represents an important detoxification pathway for both endogenous waste products and xenobiotics, including drugs and harmful industrial chemicals.

Neuropsychological tests for predicting cognitive decline in older adults.

Aim: To determine neuropsychological tests likely to predict cognitive decline.

Methods: A sample of nonconverters (n = 106) was compared with those who declined in cognitive status (n = 24). Significant univariate logistic regression prediction models were used to create multivariate logistic regression models to predict decline based on initial neuropsychological testing.

Neuronal NLRP1 inflammasome activation of Caspase-1 coordinately regulates inflammatory interleukin-1-beta production and axonal degeneration-associated Caspase-6 activation.

Neuronal active Caspase-6 (Casp6) is associated with Alzheimer disease (AD), cognitive impairment, and axonal degeneration. Caspase-1 (Casp1) can activate Casp6 but the expression and functionality of Casp1-activating inflammasomes has not been well-defined in human neurons. Here, we show that primary cultures of human CNS neurons expressed functional Nod-like receptor protein 1 (NLRP1), absent in melanoma 2, and ICE protease activating factor, but not the NLRP3, inflammasome receptor components.

Absence of lateral navigational bias in young children.

Previous research has shown American adults exhibit a systematic navigational bias to favor moving to the right when locomoting around obstacles and other people. To further investigate how and when the right-side navigational bias develops, the authors tested pre-school and early elementary school aged American children. Children ran down a straight pathway with an object at the center of the end-line.

Effect of a computerized brain exercise program on cognitive performance in older adults.

Objectives: Research indicates an association between stimulating mental activities and better memory performance as people age, but studies on computerized mental stimulation programs are limited. We explored whether computerized brain training exercises improved cognitive performance in older adults.

Methods: In local retirement communities, a convenience sample was randomized into an intervention group (N = 36), who used a computer program 5 days a week for 20-25 minutes each day, or a wait-list control group (N = 33).

Hormone replacement therapy and risk for neurodegenerative diseases.

Over the past two decades, there has been a significant amount of research investigating the risks and benefits of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) with regards to neurodegenerative disease. Here, we review basic science studies, randomized clinical trials, and epidemiological studies, and discuss the putative neuroprotective effects of HRT in the context of Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, frontotemporal dementia, and HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder. Findings to date suggest a reduced risk of Alzheimer's disease and improved cognitive functioning of postmenopausal women who use 17β-estradiol.

Bi-cell surface plasmon resonance detection of aptamer mediated thrombin capture in serum.

The serine protease coagulation factor thrombin functions primarily in hemostasis, but is also involved in atherosclerosis, thromboembolic disease, cancer and inflammatory disease. Direct measurement of coagulation proteins including thrombin in plasma samples poses a significant challenge because of lack of specific probes and low thrombin concentrations. In addition, high plasma protein concentrations in samples can result in high backgrounds.

Breakthrough thinking from inside the box.

Companies often begin their search for great ideas either by encouraging wild, outside-the-box thinking or by conducting quantitative analysis of existing market and financial data and customer opinions. Those approaches can produce middling ideas at best, say Coyne, founder of an executive-counseling firm in Atlanta, and Clifford and Dye, strategy experts at McKinsey. The problem with the first method is that few people are very good at unstructured, abstract brainstorming.

Interaural time difference processing of broadband and narrow-band noise by inexperienced listeners.

Recent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data might be interpreted as being in disagreement with existing psychophysical data regarding the laterality of broadband noise stimuli presented with large interaural time differences (ITDs). This study investigated the possibility that lateral judgments made by inexperienced listeners who did not receive feedback might be different than those reported for experienced listeners, especially when the ITD is longer than that occurring in nature, and therefore data from inexperienced listeners presented unnaturally long ITDs for the first time might be more consistent with the possible interpretation of the fMRI results. The results from this study using inexperienced listeners were not basically different from those reported in the literature based on experienced listeners, suggesting a possible difference does exist between inferences drawn from fTMRI data and human psychophysical results.

The influence of later-arriving sounds on the ability of listeners to judge the lateral position of a source.

This study examined the deleterious effects of a later-arriving sound on the processing of interaural differences of time (IDTs) from a preceding sound. A correlational analysis assessed the relative weight given to IDTs of source and echo clicks for echo delays of 1-64 ms when the echo click was attenuated relative to the source click (0-36 dB). Also measured were proportion correct and the proportion of responses predicted from the weights.

Observer weighting strategies in interaural time-difference discrimination and monaural level discrimination for a multi-tone complex.

Two experiments measured listeners' abilities to weight information from different components in a complex of 553, 753, and 953 Hz. The goal was to determine whether or not the ability to adjust perceptual weights generalized across tasks. Weights were measured by binary logistic regression between stimulus values that were sampled from Gaussian distributions and listeners' responses.

Various cutaneous disorders have been described to arise at surgical wounds and scars. Moreover, dermatologic procedures, such as cold-steel and laser surgery, can evoke koebnerization.
