Continuous-time predator-prey models admit limit cycle solutions that are vulnerable to the phenomenon of phase-sensitive tipping (P-tipping): The predator-prey system can tip to extinction following a rapid change in a key model parameter, even if the limit cycle remains a stable attractor. In this paper, we investigate the existence of P-tipping in an analogous discrete-time system: a host-parasitoid system, using the economically damaging forest tent caterpillar as our motivating example. We take the intrinsic growth rate of the consumer as our key parameter, allowing it to vary with environmental conditions in ways consistent with the predictions of global warming.

Objective: This proof-of-concept study was conducted to determine whether negative-pressure wound therapy, through the use of incisional vacuum-assisted closure (VAC), is associated with a reduction in surgical site infections (SSIs) when compared to standard wound dressings in patients undergoing open posterior spinal fusion who have a high risk of infection.

Methods: A total of 64 patients were examined; 21 patients received incisional VAC application (VAC group) versus 43 diagnosis-matched patients who received standard wound dressings (control group). Patients in the VAC group were prospectively enrolled in a consecutive series between March 2013 and March 2014 if they met the following diagnostic criteria for high risk of infection: posterior open surgery across the cervicothoracic junction; thoracic kyphosis due to metastatic disease; high-energy trauma; or multilevel revision reconstructive surgery.

Alkylation of 4-methoxy-1 H-pyrazolo[3,4- d]pyrimidine (1b) with iodomethane in THF using NaHMDS as base selectively provided N2-methyl product 4-methoxy-2-methyl-2 H-pyrazolo[3,4- d]pyrimidine (3b) in an 8/1 ratio over N1-methyl product (2b). Interestingly, conducting the reaction in DMSO reversed selectivity to provide a 4/1 ratio of N1/N2 methylated products. Crystal structures of product 3b with N1 and N7 coordinated to sodium indicated a potential role for the latter reinforcing the N2-selectivity.

Two studies were conducted to determine the effect of canola meal source on the standardized ileal digestible amino acids (AA) and nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) contents of canola meal (CM) from 6 processing plants in Canada. Two plants provided CM in both mash and pellet forms, while the other 4 provided CM in mash form only, giving a total of 8 samples. In the standardized ileal digestibility (SID) assay, 280 birds were housed 7 per cage and fed a commercial starter diet from 1 to 14 d of age followed by the test diets from 15 to 21 d.

Introduction: Accurate assessment and monitoring of the therapeutic efficacy of locally advanced prostate cancer remains a major clinical challenge. Contrary to prostate biopsies, circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are a cellular source repeatedly obtainable by blood sampling and could serve as a surrogate marker for treatment efficacy.
