Projections of winter polynyas and their biophysical impacts in the Ross Sea Antarctica.

Unlabelled: This study investigates winter polynyas in the southern Ross Sea, Antarctica where several polynyas are known to form. Coastal polynyas are areas of lower sea ice concentration and/or thickness along the coast that are otherwise surrounded by more extensive, thicker sea ice pack. Polynyas are also locations where organisms can exploit both the ice substrate and pelagic resources.

Frailty and 6-month trajectory of elderly trauma patients over the age of 65 years admitted to intensive care unit for severe trauma: experience of a level 1 trauma center.

Background: The aging global population forecasts a significant rise in severe trauma cases among individuals aged 65 and above. Frailty emerges as a paramount predictor of post-traumatic outcomes, surpassing age and trauma severity indices. Our objective was to assess the knowledge of DLB by health professionals in comparison with that of Alzheimer's disease (AD), to better understand the reasons of its under-diagnosis.

Methods: We conducted a descriptive and analytical study processing the results of an online questionnaire submitted to French healthcare professionals between December 1, 2020 and March 1, 2021.

Snow on Arctic Sea Ice in a Warming Climate as Simulated in CESM.

Earth system models are valuable tools for understanding how the Arctic snow-ice system and the feedbacks therein may respond to a warming climate. In this analysis, we investigate snow on Arctic sea ice to better understand how snow conditions may change under different forcing scenarios. First, we use in situ, airborne, and satellite observations to assess the realism of the Community Earth System Model (CESM) in simulating snow on Arctic sea ice.

20 years of functional treatment for clubfoot: advantages and limitations compared with the Ponseti method.

Currently, the Ponseti method has become the most popular technique for the management of congenital clubfoot. Besides this treatment, the functional method or the 'French method' (FFM) represents another treatment option. Throughout our study, we will describe this method, based on the 'Saint Vincent de Paul' protocol with some modifications that we bring progressively.

Sustained ocean changes contributed to sudden Antarctic sea ice retreat in late 2016.

After nearly three decades of observed increasing trends of Antarctic sea ice extent, in September-October-November 2016, there was a dramatic decrease. Here we document factors that contributed to that decrease. An atmosphere-only model with a specified positive convective heating anomaly in the eastern Indian/western Pacific Ocean, representing the record positive precipitation anomalies there in September-October-November 2016, produces an anomalous atmospheric Rossby wave response with mid- and high latitude surface wind anomalies that contribute to the decrease of Antarctic sea ice extent.

Consequences of contaminant mixture on the dynamics and functional diversity of bacterioplankton in a southwestern Mediterranean coastal ecosystem.

Contamination of coastal environments is often due to a complex mixture of pollutants, sometimes in trace levels, that may have significant effects on diversity and function of organisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term dynamics of bacterioplankton exposed to natural and artificial mixtures of contaminants. Bacterial communities from a southwestern Mediterranean ecosystem, lagoon and the bay (offshore) of Bizerte were exposed to i) elutriate from resuspension of contaminated sediment, and ii) an artificial mixture of metals and herbicides mimicking the contamination observed during sediment resuspension.

[First case of pithomycotoxicosis (facial eczema) in the Netherlands].

Between mid September and the beginning of November 2005, the Animal Health Service (AHS) received thirteen reports offarms on which several animals showed severe symptoms of solar eczema. Blood chemistry showed very high levels of GOT/AST and GGT indicative of severe liver damage. Farm visits to eight farms showed that the animals--previous to the start of the symptoms--had been grazing 24 hours/day and received no additional feed.

41 patients (pilot study-I) and 50 patients (multicenter study II) were randomized to receive as systemic chemotherapy for 6 courses with 5 FU alone (A) [440 (I)-450 (II) mg/m2 IV bolus, 5/21 days] or folinic acid followed by 5 FU (B) (respectively 200 and 370 mg/m2 IV bolus, 5/21 days). In the multicenter trial, oral levamisole at the dose of 150 mg/day (3/14 days) was added to chemotherapy for one year. Ten patients in study I and 19 patients in study II also received a post-operative course of intra-portal chemotherapy.

Determination of humoral immunoglobulins M and G directed against mycobacterial antigen 60 failed to diagnose primary tuberculosis and mycobacterial adenitis in children.

The serodiagnosis of primary tuberculosis (TB) and mycobacterial adenitis in children was tried using the Anda-Tb tests (Anda Biologicals, France) that measure immunoglobulins (Ig) M and G directed against mycobacterial antigen 60 (A60) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The 188 cases studied included 81 healthy or mycobacteria-unrelated diseased children with no reaction to tuberculin skin test (STN); 9 recent BCG vaccination (BCG); 35 asymptomatic (AsTB), 29 symptomatic (STB) primary TB and 11 adenitis caused by atypical mycobacteria from the group avium-intracellulare-scrofulaceum (MAIS) tested before treatment; and 23 past primary TB tested at different times after completion of specific treatment (past TB). The individual IgM and IgG levels largely overlapped whatever the clinical status of the children.

Urticaria pigmentosa--response to topical steroids.

A case of adult-onset urticaria pigmentosa is presented, in which the eruption cleared following the application of potent topical corticosteroids. Remission could be maintained by intermittent topical treatment. Topical steroids would appear to provide a simple, cheap and effective alternative to standard therapies.

Interleukin-2 and soluble interleukin-2 receptor levels in children with active pulmonary tuberculosis and atypical mycobacterial adenitis.

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) level was measured in sera and in supernatants of Purified Protein Derivatives of Tuberculin (PPD) stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) cultures from children with active primary pulmonary tuberculosis (TB), or adenitis caused by mycobacteria of the group Mycobacterium avium, intracellulare, scrofulaceum (MAIS). The control groups included BCG vaccinated children (BCG) and children with negative skin test to PPD (NST). High mean IL-2 level was exclusively found in sera of mild TB patients (MTB), and not in sera of MAIS infected or BCG vaccinated children.
