The seasonal occurrence of deep-water hypoxia in western Long Island Sound (LIS) has been documented for decades by water quality cruise surveys and fixed mooring buoys. While previous studies have focused on factors modulating bottom dissolved oxygen (DO) at subtidal timescales, here we analyze continuous timeseries data from a moored buoy during summers 2021 and 2022 to examine factors controlling high-frequency fluctuations in surface and bottom DO at diurnal and semidiurnal timescales. Fluctuations in surface DO at diurnal timescales are associated with biological production, while fluctuations in bottom DO near semidiurnal timescales are associated with horizontal advection of DO by tides from the upper East River tidal strait into western LIS.

Our study characterized the neurodevelopmental spectrum of individuals with PTEN Hamartoma Tumor Syndrome (PHTS), a syndrome that predisposes to both neurodevelopmental phenotypes and cancer risk. We aim to better understand life-impacting neurodevelopmental features of PHTS. Our study recruited 20 children/adolescents with PHTS, who were then administered assessments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurocognitive measures, including assessment of IQ, executive and adaptive functioning, and health-related quality of life.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a lethal muscle disease caused by absence of the protein dystrophin, which acts as a structural link between the basal lamina and contractile machinery to stabilize muscle membranes in response to mechanical stress. In DMD, mechanical stress leads to exaggerated membrane injury and fiber breakdown, with fast fibers being the most susceptible to damage. Purpose Of Review: Persistent unresolved inflammation results in a number of pathologic respiratory diseases including asthma, cystic fibrosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated ARDS. Inflammation resolution is an active series of biologic processes orchestrated by a family of bioactive specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs) derived from essential omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). In this review, we highlight recent findings on dysregulated inflammation resolution in common respiratory diseases and recent literature on SPM generation with PUFA dietary supplementation with relevance to diseases of respiratory inflammation.

The bamboos (Bambusoideae, Poaceae) comprise a major grass lineage with a complex evolutionary history involving ancient hybridization and allopolyploidy. About 1700 described species are classified into three tribes, Olyreae (herbaceous bamboos), Bambuseae (tropical woody bamboos), and Arundinarieae (temperate woody bamboos). Nuclear analyses strongly support monophyly of the woody tribes, whereas plastome analyses strongly support paraphyly, with Bambuseae sister to Olyreae.

Hypoglycemia-associated autonomic failure (HAAF) is a maladaptive failure in glucose counterregulation in persons with diabetes (PWD) that is caused by recurrent exposure to hypoglycemia. The adipokine leptin is known to regulate glucose homeostasis, and leptin levels fall following exposure to recurrent hypoglycemia. Yet, little is known regarding how reduced leptin levels influence glucose counterregulation, or if low leptin levels are involved in the development of HAAF.

Sepsis is a critical illness characterized by dysregulated inflammatory responses lacking counter-regulation. Specialized proresolving mediators are agonists for antiinflammation and for promoting resolution, and they are protective in preclinical sepsis models. Here, in human sepsis, we mapped resolution circuits for the specialized proresolving mediators resolvin D1 and resolvin D2 in peripheral blood neutrophils and monocytes, their regulation of leukocyte activation and function ex vivo, and their relationships to measures of clinical severity.
