The study aims to uncover how visual stimuli are processed and mapped onto abstract linguistic representations in the brain. This work has shown that comprehenders have preferences for potential gap sites, and immediately detect when these preferences are not met. However, neither the mechanisms that select preferred gap sites nor the mechanisms used to detect whether these preferences are met are well-understood.

We discuss examples of supposed locality biases in language comprehension and production, and their link to memory constraints.
