Stain removal, abrasion and anticaries properties of a novel low abrasion dentifrice containing micro-fibrillated cellulose: in vitro assessments.

Objectives: This laboratory study assessed the performance of a novel fluoride dentifrice containing micro-fibrillated cellulose (MFC) and entrapped silica.

Methods: Removal of extrinsic stains was assessed using the pellicle cleaning ratio (PCR) method, and radioactive dentin abrasivity (RDA) was measured, to calculate a cleaning efficiency index (CEI). Fluoride efficacy was evaluated using widely used remineralization and fluoride uptake methods.

Advancing the Role of the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Palliative Care.

Doctor of nursing practice-prepared nurses are well suited to provide high-quality palliative care to patients with serious illness and their caregivers. Their rigorous education and expertise prepare them for the complexity often associated with chronic disease and end of life. There are clear and strong recommendations from multiple national organizations supporting palliative care education for nurses and tools available for nurses to implement palliative care into practice.

Co-culture with normal and senescent AC16 cardiomyocytes modulates fibrotic response in primary human ventricular fibroblasts.

Transwell co-culture with human AC16 cardiomyocyte-like cells modifies the response of primary human ventricular fibroblasts to TGF-β stimulation. Fibrotic response markers including collagen I (COL1A1) and ɑ-smooth muscle actin (ACTA2) are amplified in the presence of AC16 cells, whereas others including periostin (POSTN) and fibronectin (FN1) are suppressed. Similar modulation is observed when the ventricular fibroblasts are co-cultured with AC16 cells under baseline and induced senescence conditions.

The magnitude and pace of global climate change demand ambitious and effective implementation of nationally determined contributions (NDCs). Nature-based solutions present an efficient approach to achieving mitigation, adaptation and resilience goals. Yet few nations have quantified the diverse benefits of nature-based solutions to evaluate and select ecosystem targets for their NDCs.

Reducing inappropriate inpatient thrombophilia testing through an electronic health record intervention.

Current literature does not support routine testing for hereditary and acquired thrombophilia disorders in the inpatient setting. Testing in the acute setting rarely changes patient management or could lead to patient mismanagement. Despite prior educational interventions, continued overuse of inpatient testing warrants further quality improvement measures.

Enhancing Doctor of Nursing Practice Students' Diagnostic and Clinical Reasoning Skills.

Background: This article describes one school of nursing's successful approach to augmenting Doctor of Nursing Practice students' diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills.

Method: Faculty convened a taskforce to evaluate the current clinical tracking system to expand the clinical log and develop a formative assessment tool.

Results: The clinical log enhancement allowed faculty to assess students' learning, clinical decision making, and readiness for clinical progression throughout the program.

Locally Advanced Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor Treated With Targeted Therapy: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are known to be associated with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene rearrangements. Other molecular alterations such as ROS proto-oncogene 1, receptor tyrosine kinase (ROS1), neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK), and platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) have also been identified in IMTs. Although there are no randomized controlled clinical trials comparing chemotherapy, tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), or other systemic therapies, the literature demonstrates the use of ALK-targeted TKIs as an effective strategy for the treatment of locally advanced or metastatic ALK-rearranged IMTs.

Reducing Blood Culture and Antibiotic Usage in Neonates: Using Quality Improvement Science to Guide Implementation of a Neonatal Early-Onset Sepsis Calculator.

Background: A maternal diagnosis of chorioamnionitis, based on maternal peripartum fever of 100.4°F alone, is commonly used as an indication for blood work and antibiotic treatment in newborns. New strategies such as the Kaiser Permanente early-onset sepsis (EOS) calculator have proven effective in identifying high-risk newborns and reducing unnecessary antibiotic administration.

An Innovative Approach to a Multitrack Advance Practice Registered Nurse Program: The Integration of Psychiatric Mental Health and Primary Care Cohorts.

We describe how an online graduate nurse practitioner program combined psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and primary care advanced practice registered nurse (AGNP/FNP/PNP) tracks into an integrated curriculum. Student evaluations and assessments, along with board certification scores, demonstrated improvement in identifying and managing behavioral health problems, as well as increased competence and collaboration with other nurse practitioner students. Details of the integrated curriculum are provided.

Interprofessional communication in the care of adults with cancer: exploring clinicians' perceptions of team rounding.

Interprofessional communication (IPC) is important for the inpatient oncology team due to the complexity and acuity of oncology patients. One intervention used to improve IPC is team rounding, yet few researchers have explored experiences of team members with team rounding. In this study, 12 interviews were conducted with providers from five different professions: Nursing Assistant, Registered Nurse, Pharmacist, Advanced Practice Provider, and Physician.

Knowledge of which pulmonary function tests are commonly performed in primary care and interpretation of their results is integral for the diagnosis, care, and management of those with pulmonary symptoms. This article provides an overview of the most common pulmonary function tests and interpretation of their results.

Quantifying climate change-relevant humanitarian programming and spending across five countries with high vulnerability to disaster.

Climate change is increasing the severity and the frequency of natural hazards and associated disasters worldwide, yet there is little data tracking how and whether it is being addressed by humanitarian assistance initiatives. Drawing on publicly available United Nations programme data and vulnerability indexes, this study pilots a novel approach to identifying and quantifying the prevalence of climate change-related humanitarian programmes from 2016-18 in five disaster-affected countries. The funding levels of proposed and undertaken interventions were analysed within specific programmatic sub-areas and across clusters.

Integration of Telehealth Education into the Health Care Provider Curriculum: A Review.

Telehealth is a rapidly expanding health care delivery modality with increasing utility in the health care community. It is imperative that telehealth education is provided during the training of health care providers to ensure the proper usage and application of this health care delivery system. A comprehensive literature review of telehealth education integrated into the curricula of physician, physician assistant, and advanced practiced registered nurse training programs has not been reported to date.

A Multisite Study Demonstrates Positive Impacts to Systems Thinking Using a Table-top Simulation Experience.

Background: Systems thinking (ST) is the ability to recognize, understand, and synthesize interactions and interdependencies in a set of components designed for a purpose. Systems thinking has been shown to improve systems and decrease error. Despite these benefits, ST has not yet been consistently integrated into all health care education programs.

Development of Parenteral Nutrition-Associated Liver Disease and Other Adverse Effects in Neonates Receiving SMOFlipid or Intralipid.

Background: Intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs) are a risk factor for parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD) in the neonatal population. Current literature supports the use of SMOFlipid (4-oil ILE), a fish oil-containing lipid emulsion, for the reversal of PNALD. However, there is little information about the use of 4-oil ILEs for preventing PNALD.

Coproducing Health Professions Education: A Prerequisite to Coproducing Health Care Services?

In 2016, Batalden et al proposed a coproduction model for health care services. Starting from the argument that health care services should demonstrate service-dominant rather than goods-dominant logic, they argued that health care outcomes are the result of the intricate interaction of the provider and patient in concert with the system, community, and, ultimately, society. The key notion is that the patient is as much an expert in determining outcomes as the provider, but with different expertise.

Consumer Response to Tomato Pomace Powder as an Ingredient in Bread: Impact of Sensory Liking and Benefit Information on Purchase Intent.

This study evaluated consumer acceptance and purchase intent (PI) for bread formulated with dried tomato pomace powder (DTPP). DTPP was used to substitute 5 or 10% by weight for a 50/50 mix of white and whole-wheat flour used in a control bread. Consumers (n = 231) evaluated sensory attributes and PI on the breads, which were produced and presented as slices from a typical commercial sandwich loaf.

Effect of repeat manual blood pressure measurement on blood pressure and stage of hypertension.

Hypertension management guidelines are influenced by clinical trials that utilize automated office blood pressure (BP) to measure BP. Many primary care clinics still use manual office BP, which has been shown to produce significantly higher BP values than automated office BP. In a primary care office, a manual BP was obtained by nursing staff using an aneroid sphygmomanometer.

Safety of Over-the-Counter Medications in Pregnancy.

Approximately 90% of pregnant women use medications while they are pregnant including both over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription medications. Some medications can pose a threat to the pregnant woman and fetus with 10% of all birth defects directly linked to medications taken during pregnancy. Many medications have documented safety for use during pregnancy, but research is limited due to ethical concerns of exposing the fetus to potential risks.

Designing and implementing asynchronous online deliberate practice to develop interprofessional communication competency.

Communicating with healthcare providers is a core tenant in the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses and Institute of Medicine teamwork and collaboration competency but remains a major concern for pre-licensure nursing students and novice nurses. Pre-licensure nursing students rarely have opportunities to practice interprofessional communication skills with other healthcare providers even though lack of this skill competency may lead to patient harm. This article explores the feasibility of using story-guided online deliberate practice sessions as an educational strategy to improve students' interprofessional critical communication competency.
