Mucoromycotina "fine root endophyte" (MFRE) fungi are an understudied group of plant symbionts that regularly co-occur with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The functional significance of MFRE in plant nutrition remains underexplored, particularly their role in plant nitrogen (N) assimilation from the variety of sources typically found in soils. Using four N-labeled N sources to track N transfer between MFRE and Plantago lanceolata, applied singly and in tandem, we investigated N source discrimination, preference, and transfer to host plants by MFRE.

Importance: Oral anticoagulation for adults with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter (AFF) who are at elevated stroke risk reduces the incidence of ischemic stroke but remains underused. The minute 'dust seeds' of some terrestrial orchids preferentially germinate and develop as mycoheterotrophic protocorms near conspecific adult plants. Here we test the hypothesis that mycorrhizal mycelial connections provide a direct pathway for transfer of recent photosynthate from conspecific green orchids to achlorophyllous protocorms. Mycelial networks of Ceratobasidium cornigerum connecting green Dactylorhiza fuchsii plants with developing achlorophyllous protocorms of the same species were established on oatmeal or water agar before the shoots of green plants were exposed to CO.

BACKGROUND Hemiballismus is the most severe form of chorea and is a hyperkinetic disorder characterized by involuntary, high-amplitude movements of the ipsilateral arm and leg, due to lesions of the contralateral side of the central nervous system. Ischemic or hemorrhagic strokes and nonketotic hyperglycemia are predominant etiologies of hemiballismus. Case reports highlighting hemiballismus associated with temporal and parietal lobe infarcts have been published, although research of frontal lobe involvement is limited.

In this case report, a patient with neuroretinitis from a  infection is described, and insights into methods to distinguish this type of case from more common etiologies of optic nerve edema are presented. A 21-year-old female with a history of right monocular vision loss due to amblyopia presented to the emergency department (ED) with occipital headache, fever, dizziness, nasal congestion, and painless blurry vision in the left eye for one day. A lumbar puncture found a slightly high opening pressure but no evidence of meningitis.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi colonize the roots of most plants, forming a near-ubiquitous symbiosis that is typically characterized by the bi-directional exchange of fungal-acquired nutrients for plant-fixed carbon. Mycorrhizal fungi can form below-ground networks with potential to facilitate the movement of carbon, nutrients, and defense signals across plant communities. The importance of neighbors in mediating carbon-for-nutrient exchange between mycorrhizal fungi and their plant hosts remains equivocal, particularly when other competing pressures for plant resources are present.

Different approaches to these components of care may lead to variation in frequency of hospitalization and stroke prevention actions, with significant implications for patient experience, cost of care, and risk of complications. Introduction: Computed tomography (CT) is performed in over 90% of patients diagnosed with ureteral stones, but only 10% of patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with acute flank pain are hospitalized for a clinically important stone or non-stone diagnosis. Hydronephrosis can be accurately detected using point-of-care ultrasound and is a key predictor of ureteral stone and risk of subsequent complications. The absence of hydronephrosis is insufficient to exclude a stone.

We have studied 22-oxahemiporphycene molecules by a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy at low temperatures and density functional theory calculations. In contrast to other molecular switches with typically two switching states, these molecules can in principle exist in three different tautomers, due to their asymmetry and three inequivalent binding positions of a hydrogen atom in their macrocycle. Different tautomers are identified from the typical appearance on the surface and tunneling electrons can be used to tautomerize single molecules in a controllable way with the highest rates if the STM tip is placed close to the hydrogen binding positions in the cavity.
