Our results showed that methylboronic acid is capable of alleviating boron deficiency, enhancing plant growth, and is less toxic than boric acid at higher concentrations. Boron is an essential plant micronutrient and its deficiency occurs in several regions globally, resulting in impaired plant growth. Boron fertilization is a common agricultural practice, but the action range of boron is narrow, sharply transitioning from deficiency to toxicity.

Directional well drilling and hydraulic fracturing has enabled energy production from previously inaccessible resources, but caused vegetation conversion and landscape fragmentation, often in relatively undisturbed habitats. We improve forecasts of future ecological impacts from unconventional oil and gas play developments using a new, more spatially-explicit approach. We applied an energy production outlook model, which used geologic and economic data from thousands of wells and three oil price scenarios, to map future drilling patterns and evaluate the spatial distribution of vegetation conversion and habitat impacts.

Objective: The impact of immobilization techniques on older adult trauma patients with spinal injury has rarely been studied. Our advisory group implemented a change in the immobilization protocol used by emergency medical services (EMS) professionals across a region encompassing 9 trauma centers and 24 EMS agencies in a Rocky Mountain state using a decentralized process on July 1, 2014. We sought to determine whether implementing the protocol would alter immobilization methods and affect patient outcomes among adults ≥60 years with a cervical spine injury.

The term angiogenesis arose in the 18th century. Several studies over the next 100 years laid the groundwork for initial studies performed by the Folkman laboratory, which were at first met with some opposition. Once overcome, the angiogenesis field has flourished due to studies on tumor angiogenesis and various developmental models that can be genetically manipulated, including mice and zebrafish.

Study Question: Can primary human uterine microvascular endothelial cells (UtMVECs) be used as a model to study uterine angiogenic responses in vitro that are relevant in pregnancy?

Summary Answer: UtMVECs demonstrated angiogenic responses when stimulated with proangiogenic factors, including sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), physiological levels of wall shear stress (WSS), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) and various combinations of estrogen and progesterone.

What Is Known Already: During sprouting angiogenesis, signaling from growth factors and cytokines induces a monolayer of quiescent endothelial cells (ECs) lining the vasculature to degrade the extracellular matrix and invade the surrounding tissue to form new capillaries. During pregnancy and the female reproductive cycle, the uterine endothelium becomes activated and undergoes sprouting angiogenesis to increase the size and number of blood vessels in the endometrium.

Objective: To assess the effects of bevacizumab and everolimus, individually and combined, on CT perfusion (CTp) parameters in liver metastases from neuroendocrine tumors (mNET) and normal liver.

Methods: This retrospective study comprised 27 evaluable patients with mNETs who had participated in a two-arm randomized clinical trial of mono-therapy with bevacizumab (Arm B) or everolimus (Arm E) for 3 weeks, followed by combination of both targeted agents. CTp was undertaken at baseline, 3 and 9 weeks, to evaluate blood flow (BF), blood volume (BV), mean transit time (MTT), permeability surface area product (PS), and hepatic arterial fraction (HAF) of mNET and normal liver, using a dual-input distributed parameter physiological model.

Contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography (ceVUS) is a dynamic imaging technique that makes it possible to study the structure of the urinary tract after the administration of intravesical contrast material. Initially, ceVUS was indicated mainly to study vesicoureteral reflux (VUR); however, since the ability of ceVUS to depict the structure of the urethra was demonstrated in both sexes, ceVUS is now indicated for examination of the entire urinary tract. The main benefit of ceVUS is that it does not use ionizing radiation.

Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) is necessary for the development of precursor lesions and cervical cancer. HPV infection among women living with HIV/AIDS (WLHA) occurs more frequently, presents a higher rate of persistent infections and an earlier progression to cancer. We aimed to evaluate HR-HPV prevalence, incidence and clearance, and its association with HIV viral suppression, immunological response and other risk factors among WLHA followed at an STD/HIV reference center.

Nutrient inputs and ultraviolet radiation (UVR) are global factors affecting the structure and functioning of aquatic ecosystems, particularly clear-water ecosystems. We performed experiments in two model lakes highly exposed to UVR fluxes in order to test the effect that future increases in mineral nutrients transported by dust aerosol might exert on primary producers depending on the likelihood of atmospheric inputs. Lake La Caldera (Northern Hemisphere) has been receiving recurrent dust inputs from the Sahara Desert while lake Los Cántaros (Southern Hemisphere) has been less affected by dust aerosol.

Notch signaling is a key regulator of angiogenesis, in which sprouting is regulated by an equilibrium between inhibitory Dll4-Notch signaling and promoting Jagged-Notch signaling. Whereas Fringe proteins modify Notch receptors and strengthen their activation by Dll4 ligands, other mechanisms balancing Jagged and Dll4 signaling are yet to be described. The intermediate filament protein vimentin, which has been previously shown to affect vascular integrity and regenerative signaling, is here shown to regulate ligand-specific Notch signaling.
