Pyrene-phenylglycinol tangled ratiometric sensor (R)-1 was developed for the detection of Al ion over other metal ions. Ratiometric behaviour of (R)-1 for Al ion explained through monomer emission and excimer quenching leads to avoiding the π-π interactions of bis-pyrene rings. Pull-push to push-pull binding mechanism is successfully explained by DFT and sensing of Al-ions demonstrated in living cells.

In the present study we analyzed the effect of structural distinction in neodymium nanostructures for modulating angiogenic process as the strategy for identifying biocompatible Nano therapeutics for biomedical applications. We observed structural dependence of Nd nanoparticles on biocompatibility, the spherical polymorphs showed better biocompatibility when compared with cuboidal and nanorod shaped polymorphs of neodymium. The Nd nanopolymorphs in spherical morphology exhibited least redox modulating effect compared to cuboidal shaped that was higher when compared to Nd nanorods.

Article Synopsis
  • The redox state of endothelial cells (ECs) is crucial for regulating angiogenesis, with potential alterations providing targets for enhancing or inhibiting this process.
  • Researchers synthesized a redox modulator using Plumbagin on a silver nano framework (PCSN), testing its effects on ECs under both normal and stimulated conditions.
  • In normal conditions, the modulator promoted angiogenesis by facilitating EC interactions, while under tumor-like conditions, it generated excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) that led to cytotoxic effects, inhibiting angiogenesis and highlighting the importance of maintaining optimal ROS levels for EC survival.

Despite being a favorable candidate in wound dressing, collagen based biomaterials possess inferior mechanical properties which limit their usage. Collagen based hybrid nanofibers with other polymers can enhance their mechanical strength as well as their biological properties. Herein, we report collagen-silk fibroin hybrid nanofibers incorporated with fenugreek, an antioxidant, as a bioactive wound dressing material.

Bacterial colonization on medical devices is a major concern in the healthcare industry. In the present study, we report synthesis of environmental sustainable reduced graphene oxide (rGO) on the large scale through biosynthetic route and its potential application for antibacterial coating on medical devices. HRTEM image depicts formation of graphene nanosheet, while DLS and ζ potential studies reveal that in aqueous medium the average hydrodynamic size and surface charge of rGO are 4410 ± 116 nm and -25.

The present study illustrates the progress of the wheat grass bioactive-reinforced collagen-based aerogel system as an instructive scaffold for collagen turnover and angiogenesis for wound healing applications. The reinforcement of wheat grass bioactives in collagen resulted in the design and development of aerogels with enhanced physicochemical and biomechanical properties due to the intermolecular interaction between the active growth factors of wheat grass and collagen fibril. Differential scanning calorimetry analysis revealed an enhanced denaturation temperature when compared to those of native collagen aerogels.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the use of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) of different sizes (10nm, 35nm, 55nm) in creating a collagen-based scaffold for tissue engineering and wound healing.
  • AgNPs were synthesized using pectin through a microwave method, and their incorporation improved the properties of collagen scaffolds, such as increased denaturation temperature and mechanical strength.
  • Findings indicate that the 10nm Ag-pectin nanoparticles enhance both antibacterial activity and cell viability for keratinocytes, suggesting potential use in biomedical applications.

This paper elucidates the development of a curcumin cross-linked collagen aerogel system with controlled anti-proteolytic activity and pro-angiogenic efficacy. The results of this study showed that in situ cross-linking of curcumin with collagen leads to the development of aerogels with enhanced physical and mechanical properties. The integrity of collagen after cross-linking with curcumin was studied via FTIR spectroscopy.

In recent years, several fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl (Fmoc)-functionalized amino acids and peptides have been used to construct hydrogels, which find a wide range of applications. Although several hydrogels have been prepared from mono Fmoc-functionalized amino acids, herein, we demonstrate the importance of an additional Fmoc-moiety in the hydrogelation of double Fmoc-functionalized L-lysine [Fmoc(Nα)-L-lysine(NεFmoc)-OH, (Fmoc-K(Fmoc))] as a low molecular weight gelator (LMWG). Unlike other Fmoc-functionalized amino acid gelators, Fmoc-K(Fmoc) exhibits pH-controlled ambidextrous gelation (hydrogelation at different pH values as well as organogelation), which is significant among the gelators.

The present work describes the development of a novel wound dressing material based on nano-biotechnological intervention by caging plumbagin on silver nanoparticle (PCSN) as a multi-site cross-linking agent of collagen scaffolds with potent anti-microbial and wound healing activity. Cross-linking of collagen with PCSN enhanced the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties along with the kinetics of micro structural fibril assembly of the collagen molecule. FTIR and CD analysis revealed that cross-linking of collagen using PCSN did not induce any structural changes in the collagen molecule.

The current study aims at understanding the influence of curcumin caged silver nanoparticle (CCSNP) on stability of collagen. The results indicated that curcumin caged silver nanoparticles efficiently stabilize collagen, indicated by enhanced tensile strength, fibril formation and viscosity. The tensile strength of curcumin caged silver nanoparticle cross-linked collagen and elongation at break was also found to be higher than glutaraldehyde cross-linked collagen.

Plumbagin is a nutraceutical with potent anti-cancer activity. However, the therapeutic efficacy of plumbagin is overshadowed by the lack of sensitivity and selectivity towards cancer cells. The present study evaluated the use of nano-biotechnological intervention to cage plumbagin in silver nanoparticles for selective targeting of its biological effects towards cancerous cells.
