Multiple-indicator-dilution experiments were performed in the lungs of 13 anesthetized dogs by simultaneous bolus injection of 111In-labeled neutrophils, 51Cr-labeled red blood cells, and Evans blue-labeled albumin. Concomitant counts of unlabeled neutrophils were similar in pulmonary artery and aortic blood samples, demonstrating a dynamic balance across the lungs in the physiological state. Outflow profiles of labeled neutrophils were analyzed on the basis of a recirculatory pharmacokinetic model of labeled albumin.

Heart rate, arterial blood pressure and central haemodynamics [pre-ejection period and rapid left ventricular ejection time ( T (1)), slow ejection time ( T (2)) and d Z /d t (max) (where Z is thoracic impedance), assessed by the transthoracic impedance technique], were recorded during supine rest and during a 45 min 70 degrees HUT test in 68 patients (40+/-2 years) with a history of unexplained recurrent syncope. We found that 38 patients (42+/-3 years) had a symptomatic outcome to 70 degrees HUT (fainters) and 30 (39+/-2 years) had a negative outcome (non-fainters).

Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) is present on the luminal surface of the coronary vessels, mostly on capillary endothelium. ACE is also expressed on coronary smooth muscle cells and on plaque lipid-laden macrophages. Excessive coronary circulation (CC)-ACE activity might be linked to plaque progression.

The aim of this study was to compare the positive or negative responses to passive tilt between isoproterenol- and nitroglycerin-sensitized upright tilt. Ninety-six patients referred for unexplained recurrent syncope underwent passive tilt (45 minutes at 70 degrees angle), which was then systematically followed, within the same session and in a random order, by a 20-minute tilt at a 70 degrees angle after administration of nitroglycerin (NTG-tilt) and 10-minute tilt at a 70 degrees angle with a continuous infusion of isoproterenol (ISO-tilt).

Although environmental factors such as allergen exposure are risk factors in the development of asthma, both twin and family studies point to a strong genetic component. To date, linkage studies have identified more than a dozen genomic regions linked to asthma.

Animal Population: Twelve healthy adult dogs.
Osteoporosis is a complex disease that affects >10 million people in the United States and results in 1.5 million fractures annually. In addition, the high prevalence of osteopenia (low bone mass) in the general population places a large number of people at risk for developing the disease.

Standard 12-lead ECG and echocardiography with pulsed Doppler tissue imaging (DTI) were recorded in 35 DCM patients (mean age 58 +/- 11 years) with QRS duration from narrow (80 ms) to broad (222 ms) patterns. The timefor left ventricular activation was evaluated from the onset of QRS to the onset of aortic flow (Q-Ao) by standard pulsed Doppler (SP) or to the onset of mitral annulus systolic wave (Q-Mit) (DTI).

Hemodynamic assessment also only provides a global evaluation of the pulmonary vascular bed, whereas PH is an inhomogeneous disease of the vessel wall.
Methods And Results: We assessed the value of intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) in 30 patients with suspected PH and correlated the structural changes in distal pulmonary arteries found on IVUS with conventional hemodynamic data.
Background: We evaluated the effects of chronic therapy with the selective ET(A)receptor antagonist LU 135252 (LU) on pulmonary vascular reactivity in congestive heart failure.
Methods And Results: After myocardial infarction (MI) or sham operation, rats were gavaged with LU or saline for 4 weeks. Studies were performed in isolated lungs and to differentiate acute from chronic effects, some experiments were performed with LU in the perfusate.

Background: Coronary artery bypass operations are associated with increased circulating levels of the powerful vasoconstrictor endothelin 1. The pulmonary circulation is an important site for both production and clearance of endothelin 1. Lung endothelial injury resulting from cardiopulmonary bypass could modify pulmonary endothelin 1 metabolism through an increase in production, a reduction in removal, or a combination of both.

Data assessing the safety of the antifibrinolytic drug tranexamic acid (TA) in patients undergoing this procedure are lacking.
Methods: From September 1997 to December 1999, 221 patients underwent nonemergency primary CABG with endarterectomy of the right coronary artery alone in 149, the left anterior descending in 35, or both right and left anterior descending in 27.

The authors report a case of Löffler's fibroblastic endocarditis complicating a toxocarosis infection. Parasitic infestation with toxocara canis is usually asymptomatic, but this was a very rare observation of cerebral involvement associated with symptomatic Löffler's endocarditis. This is an unusual form of restrictive cardiac disease constantly accompanied by prolonged hypereosinophilia.

These pacemakers are particularly useful in patients with chronotropic insufficiency when the sinus node is incapable of accelerating during exercise. The latest pacemakers have two sensors to reproduce optimal physiological sinus acceleration.

The conventional concepts of the pathogenesis of acute coronary syndromes are changing. High-risk lesions are not necessarily the angiographicaly 'tight' stenoses. Rather, vulnerable lesions are those that are unstable, with a large lipid core and a thin fibrous cap.

The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the incidence, timing and classical presentations of thyroid dysfunction in patients treated long-term with amiodarone. Ninety patients (sex ratio M/W 67/33, mean age 71 years) were followed up for 48 months. The daily dose of amiodarone was 200 mg after loading doses during the hospital stay for atrial fibrillation.

Depending on their net effects after blockade of endothelial and smooth muscle ET(B) receptors, nonselective ET(A/B) antagonists could be more or less effective than selective ET(A) antagonists.
Methods And Results: Two weeks after injection of saline or 60 mg/kg monocrotaline (MCT), rats received 50 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) of a selective (LU135252) or nonselective (BSF420627) antagonist for 3 weeks.

Treatment effects of tirofiban were examined in a Canadian cohort of 834 patients enrolled in the Canadian Platelet Receptor Inhibition in Ischemic Syndrome Management in Patients Limited by Unstable Signs and Symptoms (PRISM-PLUS) trial according to admission into hospitals without (n = 322) or with catheterization facilities (n = 512). Hospital transfers for cardiac catheterization were facilitated using preexisting networks accelerated for the purposes of the protocol.

It is based on clinical judgment and three clinical variables: comorbid conditions categorized as controlled or uncontrolled, surgical complexity, and urgency of the procedure. This study compared the CARE score with the Parsonnet, Tuman, and Tu multifactorial risk indexes for prediction of mortality and morbidity after cardiac surgery.

Objective: Estimation of both physical and psychological effects of an adapted physical training on children undergoing an obesity treatment.
Material And Methods: The survey was carried out on 36 obese boys (ages = 12-16 years) who stayed in the medical center for at least four months. Eighteen of them were trained with the SELF method (the SELF-training is global, progressive, adapted to each boy, controlled and takes place within a ten-week period with five sessions a fortnight, each session lasting 30 to 40 minutes).
