The efficacy and nephrotoxicity associated with colistin use in an intensive care unit in Vietnam: Use of colistin in a population of lower body weight.

Background: There has been a growing need for colistin as a key drug for the treatment of MDR-GNB infection. Information on colistin use in Asian population is limited.

Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted to assess the efficacy and nephrotoxicity in critically ill adult patients who received intravenous colistin for MDR-GNB infection in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Bach Mai Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam.

During its cycle, the hematozoon parasite develops through three major periods. The first, malarial infection, corresponds to the intrahepatic development of infective forms from the mosquito vector; this period is not sensitive to treatment and is often asymptomatic.

Two cases of opportunistic parasite infections in patients receiving alemtuzumab.

Two cases are reported of rare digestive opportunistic parasites in patients being treated with alemtuzumab for lymphoid haematological malignancies. In both patients, classical biological examinations were insufficient to reach the diagnosis. Only specific parasitological techniques enabled diagnoses of cryptosporidiosis and microsporidiosis, respectively.

Molecular characterization of a new Tetratrichomonas species in a patient with empyema.

A new Tetratrichomonas species was identified by molecular and phylogenetic approaches in the pleural fluid from a patient with encysted empyema leading to dyspnea. This observation raised the questions of the real prevalence of pulmonary trichomonosis in humans, the zoonotic potential of trichomonads, and the existence of human-host-adapted strains.

[Emergence in humans of fascioliasis (from Fasciola gigantica) and intestinal distomatosis (from Fasciolopsis buski) in Laos].

Distomatoses due to Fasciola spp. and Fasciolopsis buski are very common in the developing countries of Southeast Asia. The flukes in Laos have not yet been completely studied and described, however.

Genotype of 88 Toxoplasma gondii isolates associated with toxoplasmosis in immunocompromised patients and correlation with clinical findings.

We report the genotyping analysis of Toxoplasma gondii isolates in samples collected from 88 immunocompromised patients, along with clinical and epidemiological data. Most of these samples were collected in France during the current decade by the Toxoplasma Biological Resource Center. Lack of specific anti-Toxoplasma treatment, pulmonary toxoplasmosis, and involvement of multiple organs were the 3 main risk factors associated with death for this patient group.

Introduction: All cases of cysticercosis diagnosed in France are thought to be imported. Our case report concerns a 48-year-old man who has never left Europe, in whom we diagnosed subcutaneous cysticercosis.

Case: Histologic examination of the subcutaneous nodule extracted from this patient's abdominal wall showed cysticercosis.
