Background: An elevated body mass index (>30 kg/m) has been a relative contraindication for living kidney donation; however, such donors have become more common. Given the association between obesity and development of diabetes, hypertension, and end-stage renal disease, there is concern about the long-term health of obese donors.

Human neural stem cells (hNSCs) can differentiate into an oligodendrocyte lineage to facilitate remyelination in patients. Molecular mechanisms underlying oligodendrocyte fate specification remains unknown, hindering the development of efficient methods to generate oligodendrocytes from hNSCs. This phase 1 study investigated the safety of the anthracycline amrubicin combined with lenalidomide and dexamethasone in adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Based on a recent metacognitive account, cognitive effort is the result of an inferential evaluation made over explicitly available cues. Following from this account, we present here a pre-registered experiment that tested the specific hypothesis that explicit awareness of cues that are aligned with cognitive demand is a prerequisite in avoiding effortful lines of action. We attempted to modulate levels of effort avoidance behavior by introducing an incentive (between-subjects) to monitor two lines of action that, unbeknownst to individuals, varied in the probability of a task switch.

Objectives: We investigated the impact of patient age and disease duration on islet isolation results, diabetes outcomes, and pain outcomes after total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplant (TPIAT) performed in 64 patients with hereditary pancreatitis due to PRSS1 gene mutation.

Methods: We evaluated the association of patient age and disease duration on islet isolation results and opioid use at 1 year using logistic regression and on graft function using 1-way analysis of variance.

Results: Islet mass was negatively associated with increasing age and longer disease duration, with a 13% reduction (95% confidence interval [CI], 3%-22%) and 22% (95% CI, 14%-29%) reduction in islet equivalents per kilogram body weight (IEQ/kg) for each 5 years of age and disease duration, respectively.

The sensory neuron of Aplysia californica participates in several forms of presynaptic plasticity including homosynaptic depression, heterosynaptic depression, facilitation and the reversal of depression. The calcium channel triggering neurotransmitter release at most synapses is Ca2, consisting of the pore forming α1 subunit (Ca2α1), and auxiliary Caβ, and Caα2δ subunits. To determine the role of the Ca2 channel in presynaptic plasticity in Aplysia, we cloned Aplysia Ca2α1, Caβ, and Caα2δ and over-expressed the proteins in Aplysia sensory neurons (SN).

Background/objectives: Total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) is considered for managing chronic pancreatitis in selected patients when medical and endoscopic interventions have not provided adequate relief from debilitating pain. Although more centers are performing TPIAT, we lack large, multi-center studies to guide decisions about selecting candidates for and timing of TPIAT.

Methods: Multiple centers across the United States (9 to date) performing TPIAT are prospectively enrolling patients undergoing TPIAT for chronic pancreatitis into the Prospective Observational Study of TPIAT (POST), a NIDDK funded study with a goal of accruing 450 TPIAT recipients.

Aim: Islet autotransplantation (IAT) is considered a 'non-immune' model of islet transplant, with no risk for autoimmune-mediated beta cell loss, but we have previously observed de novo type 1 diabetes in one total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT) recipient. We aimed to investigate the clinical significance of glutamic acid decarboxylase antibodies (GADA), as a sensitive marker for autoimmune diabetes mellitus (DM), in patients with chronic pancreatitis undergoing TPIAT.

Methods: We identified 9 patients undergoing TPIAT with elevated GADA pre-TPIAT (8 non-diabetic and 1 with C-peptide positive DM), otherwise demographically similar to GADA negative TPIAT recipients (n=341).
