The associations of anxiety, depression and personal illness representations with glycaemic control and health-related quality of life in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Objective: This study examined the interrelationships of anxiety, depression and personal illness representations with glycaemic control and health-related quality of life in adults with Type 2 diabetes.

Methods: One hundred eighty-four consecutive patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus completed the Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ), the Well-Being Scale (WBQ) and the Short Form 36 Health Survey Questionnaire (SF-36). Demographic characteristics, details of diabetes status (duration of diabetes, treatments and complications) and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) were recorded.

Gastric and biliary excretion of meperidine in man.

The role and importance of enterogastric secretion in the disposition and elimination of the weak base, meperidine (pKa 8.63), was studied after intravenous administration (50 mg) of the drug to 6 normal volunteers. Continuous collection of the gastric fluid over a 4-hr period demonstrated the establishment of high gastric fluid/plasma concentration ratios for meperidine (mean about 50, range, 10 to 200).

Use of retrograde cholangiography in guiding radiotherapy of obstructive jaundice due to tumor.

A patient with oat cell carcinoma of the lung which was responsive to radiotherapy developed jaundice. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatocholangiography (ERCP) revealed compression of the distal common bile duct. Radiotherapy to this area produced prompt and prolonged relief of the obstructive jaundice.

Gastrointestinal disorders: the role of diet in cause and management.

Diet has a definite role in certain gastrointestinal disorders, and dietary manipulation often is beneficial. In other cases, such as peptic ulcer, traditional dietary therapy cannot be justified by available evidence.
