We have developed a simple and straightforward synthesis of chiral -imidazolidinone cyclohexenones, featuring six contiguous stereocenters, from feedstock chemicals such as aminophenols, α,β-unsaturated aldehydes, and α-amino acids. Remarkably, this one-pot multicomponent reaction exhibits exceptional diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr) and relies solely on an amino acid precursor as the chiral source, avoiding the use of transition metals or additional organocatalysts. This reaction is efficient and scalable, enabling synthesis on a gram-scale.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how daily rainfall characteristics—like intensity, duration, and frequency—affect mortality rates from all causes, cardiovascular issues, and respiratory problems across 34 countries from 1980 to 2020.
  • It utilizes a time series analysis to evaluate the association between daily mortality and rainfall events that occur at different return periods (one, two, and five years), including the effects of extreme rainfall with a 14-day lag.
  • The results indicate that extreme rainfall events (five-year return period) correlate with increased mortality rates, particularly for respiratory cases, while moderate rainfall shows protective effects, and the impact varies based on climate and vegetation.

Background And Aim: The African swine fever virus (ASFV), spanning 170-193 kb, contains over 200 proteins, including p72 and p30, which play crucial roles in the virus's entry and expression. This study investigated the capability of detecting ASFV early through the analysis of genes B646L and CP204L, encoding p72 and p30 antigen proteins, by employing ASFV, diagnosis, immunohistochemistry (IHC), quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), and IHC techniques.

Materials And Methods: Samples were taken from both experimentally and field-infected pigs to evaluate the effectiveness of qPCR and IHC in detecting ASFV.

Introduction: Older patients typically face elevated mortality rates and greater medical resource utilization during hospitalizations compared to their younger counterparts. Sarcopenia, serving as a prognostic indicator, is related to disability, diminished quality of life, and increased mortality. The SARC-F questionnaire, known for its cost-effectiveness, offers a valuable means of assessing sarcopenia.

  • Temperature variability (TV), both intra-day and inter-day, impacts mortality rates, but this study found intra-day variation poses a higher risk to all-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality.
  • Analyzing data from 758 locations over nearly 50 years, the researchers discovered that each increase in intra-day TV correlates with a greater increase in mortality risk compared to inter-day TV.
  • The study recommends further evaluations of the impacts of temperature variability on health, particularly focusing on intra-day fluctuations, which accounted for more than four times the mortality risk compared to inter-day variability.

Purpose Of Review: Falls are a major global public health issue and the second cause of unintentional injury death. Nutrition may be an important factor for falls prevention in adults, but most previous studies examined the associations between single nutrients and falls. The use of dietary patterns is an alternative method to measure whole diet and its relationship with health outcomes.

Introduction: Methamphetamine use threatens positive treatment outcomes in substance use and HIV, for people with opioid use disorders (POUD) in many countries. This paper describes the adaptation of four evidence-based interventions (EBI) (motivational interviewing, contingency management, Matrix group model and SMS text messaging) for treating methamphetamine use among POUD receiving methadone maintenance therapy in Vietnam.

Methods: Following the ADAPT-ITT (Assessment-Decision-Administration-Production-Topical experts-Training-Testing) framework, we conducted 16 focus group discussions with POUD (n = 25) and providers (n = 22) at four methadone clinics in two largest cities (Hanoi in the North, Ho Chi Minh City in the South) to assess patterns of methamphetamine use and to get feedback on proposed EBIs.
