Postmortem interval (PMI) estimation, a parameter critical for solving criminal cases, remains a challenge. It has been suggested that elasticity of decomposing tissue may show a relationship to PMI. We measured elasticity of excised porcine skin at regular intervals for 17 days using a novel ultrasound device.

Adipose tissue dysfunction is one of the features of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) with dysregulated adipogenesis, altered functional pathways and increased inflammation. It is increasingly clear that there are also male correlates of the hormonal and metabolic features of PCOS. We hypothesised that the effects of adipose tissue dysfunction are not sex-specific but rather fat depot-specific and independent of obesity.

Neotropical freshwater stingrays of the subfamily Potamotrygoninae exhibit aplacental viviparity with uterine trophonemata. In this reproductive mode, females nourish and provide oxygenation to the embryo via the mucosa of the uterine wall. The aim of this study was to describe and histologically quantify the tissue components of the gravid uterus in an Amazonian freshwater stingray.

Morphology of the Digestive Tube of the Amazonian Freshwater Stingray Potamotrygon wallacei (Elasmobranchii: Potamotrygonidae): A Stereological Approach.

This work aimed to describe and quantify the tissue components of the digestive tube of the neotropical freshwater stingray, Potamotrygon wallacei. For this, conventional histology and stereological methods were used to estimate tissue volume. The volumes of the four fundamental layers and the tissue components in the stomach (cardiac and pyloric) and spiral intestine were also estimated.

Concretizing plan specifications as realizables within the OBO foundry.

Background: Within the Open Biological and Biomedical Ontology (OBO) Foundry, many ontologies represent the execution of a plan specification as a process in which a realizable entity that concretizes the plan specification, a "realizable concretization" (RC), is realized. This representation, which we call the "RC-account", provides a straightforward way to relate a plan specification to the entity that bears the realizable concretization and the process that realizes the realizable concretization. However, the adequacy of the RC-account has not been evaluated in the scientific literature.

Effects of trichlorfon on ecotoxicological biomarkers in farmed Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui).

Producers of fish have been looking for viable alternatives for the management of Colossoma macropomum (tambaqui) in confinement systems in order to avoid the harm and subsequent losses caused by parasitic diseases. One alternative used by farmers is pesticides, such as trichlorfon, which has a genotoxic effect. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the changes in gene expression due to the side effects of trichlorfon in tambaqui.

Infection is a major concern in surgery involving grafting and should be considered thoroughly when designing biomaterials. There is considerable renewed interest in silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) owing to their ability to potentiate antibacterial properties against multiple bacterial strains. This study aimed to develop two antibacterial bone regenerative scaffolds by integrating AgNPs in bovine bone particles (BBX) (Product 1), and a light cross-linked hydrogel GelMA (Product 2).

Quantity and Size of Titanium Particles Released from Different Mechanical Decontamination Procedures on Titanium Discs: An In Vitro Study.

Complications such as peri-implantitis could ultimately affect the survival of a dental implant. The prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases require managing bacterial biofilm and controlling environmental risks, including the presence of pro-inflammatory titanium (Ti) particles in the peri-implant niche. Objectives included the evaluation of the size and quantity of Ti particles released from moderately roughened Ti surfaces during common mechanical surface decontamination methods.

MRIO: the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Acquisition and Analysis Ontology.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain is a useful tool in both the clinic and research settings, aiding in the diagnosis and treatments of neurological disease and expanding our knowledge of the brain. However, there are many challenges inherent in managing and analyzing MRI data, due in large part to the heterogeneity of data acquisition. To address this, we have developed MRIO, the Magnetic Resonance Imaging Acquisition and Analysis Ontology.

Reference ontologies offer an opportunity to support knowledge and data integration. The Kidney Precision Medicine Project (KPMP) team contributed to the representation and addition of 329 kidney phenotype terms to the Human Phenotype Ontology (HPO), and identified many subcategories of acute kidney injury (AKI) or chronic kidney disease (CKD).

In vivo healing of low temperature deproteinized bovine bone xenograft in a rabbit cranial model.

The physicochemical properties of grafting materials affect the quality of the osteointegration, resorption rate, and the new bone (NB) formation. This study assessed the physicochemical properties and integration of a low temperature deproteinized bovine bone xenograft (BBX), referred to as optimized MoaBone® (OMB). This novel BBX was physiochemically characterized both pre and post chemical bleaching and sterilization by gamma irradiation.

"I lost my first tooth here": Syrian former refugees' experiences of oral healthcare in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Aim: Oral health conditions are highly prevalent among former refugees; however, little is known about their experiences of accessing dental care. We aimed to explore Syrian former refugees' experiences of oral healthcare in New Zealand.

Method: Thirty-nine Syrian former refugees resettled in Dunedin, New Zealand participated in nine focus group discussions.

Survival analysis of posterior composite restorations in National Dental PBRN general dentistry practices.

Objective: Quantify the survival of posterior composite restorations (PCR) placed during the study period in permanent teeth in United States (US) general dental community practices and factors predictive of that survival.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted utilizing de-identified electronic dental record (EDR) data of patients who received a PCR in 99 general dentistry practices in the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (Network). The final analyzed data set included 700,885 PCRs from 200,988 patients.

Development of an acute ovine model of polycystic ovaries to assess the effect of ovarian denervation.

Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) seems to be associated with increased ovarian sympathetic nerve activity and in rodent models of PCOS reducing the sympathetic drive to the ovary, through denervation or neuromodulation, improves ovulation rate. We hypothesised that sympathetic nerves work with gonadotropins to promote development and survival of small antral follicles to develop a polycystic ovary phenotype.

Methods: Using a clinically realistic ovine model we showed a rich sympathetic innervation to the normal ovary and reinnervation after ovarian transplantation.

Recent advances in the understanding of tubal ectopic pregnancy.

Ectopic pregnancy (EP) is described as the implantation of an embryo outside the normal uterine cavity. It most commonly occurs in the fallopian tube, hence termed a tubal ectopic pregnancy (tEP). It is a gynaecological emergency and remains the leading cause of direct maternal mortality related to the first trimester of pregnancy worldwide.

Blood Biochemical Reference Intervals of Black Caimans (Melanosuchus niger) and Spectacled Caimans (Caiman crocodilus) in the Brazilian Amazon Region.

Reference intervals for physiologic parameters, crucial for assessing the health status of animals, have been documented for various crocodilian species across the globe. Nonetheless, the establishment of plasma biochemical reference intervals specific to Amazonian crocodilians remains incomplete. In an effort to address this gap, we procured blood samples from 65 black caimans (Melanosuchus niger) and 58 spectacled caimans (Caiman crocodilus) during the period of September-December 2019 within the Anavilhanas National Park in the Brazilian Amazon region We aimed to define reference intervals for 11 key plasma variables measured, namely glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, albumin, total protein, uric acid, and urea.

Improving the Quality and Utility of Electronic Health Record Data through Ontologies.

The translational research community, in general, and the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) community, in particular, share the vision of repurposing EHRs for research that will improve the quality of clinical practice. Many members of these communities are also aware that electronic health records (EHRs) suffer limitations of data becoming poorly structured, biased, and unusable out of original context. This creates obstacles to the continuity of care, utility, quality improvement, and translational research.

Aligning Standards Communities for Omics Biodiversity Data: Sustainable Darwin Core-MIxS Interoperability.

The standardization of data, encompassing both primary and contextual information (metadata), plays a pivotal role in facilitating data (re-)use, integration, and knowledge generation. However, the biodiversity and omics communities, converging on omics biodiversity data, have historically developed and adopted their own distinct standards, hindering effective (meta)data integration and collaboration.
