Background: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare clinical outcome results, perceived function, and overall preference among patients who had undergone staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) with a cruciate-retaining, customized implant (customized TKA, or C-TKA) in 1 knee and an off-the-shelf (OTS) implant in the contralateral knee.

Methods: Forty-seven patients (94 knees) from a single study center who underwent C-TKA in 1 knee and had previously undergone TKA with an OTS implant in the contralateral knee were included in this study. As the primary outcome measures, the Knee injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score, Joint Replacement (KOOS, JR) and the Forgotten Joint Score (FJS) were self-administered by the study subjects at a single follow-up time point.

A neonatal lumbar puncture can present many challenges for emergency nurses that may not be seen with older children or adults. It is imperative that emergency nurses have the knowledge and training related to the procedure to ensure a positive process for the neonate, involved family and health care team members, as well as the overall outcomes of the procedure. This paper provides a practical guide to the essential knowledge for a neonatal lumbar puncture in the emergency department.

This study examined the effect of exogenous mixed-enzyme supplementation (xylanase, β-glucanase, and pectinase) to a corn-SBM (CS) and a wheat-CS-based (WCS) diet in birds challenged with coccidia vaccine (Coccivac B-52™). The WCS-based diet was produced by replacing 30% of the energy-yielding portions of the CS-based diet with wheat. On day 14, 448 ( = 7) Cobb by-product breeder male broilers were assigned to a 2 (diet types) × 2 (with or without enzyme supplementation) × 2 (0 or 20 × coccidia vaccine challenge; CVC) factorial arrangement of treatments in a completely randomized design for the determination of the apparent metabolizable energy (AME) value of wheat.

Introduction: Infants aged 0 days to 28 days are at high risk for serious bacterial infection and require an extensive evaluation, including blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid cultures, and admission for empiric antibiotics. Although there are no guidelines that recommend a specific time to antibiotics for these infants, quicker administration is presumed to improve care and outcomes. At baseline, 19% of these infants in our emergency department received antibiotics within 120 minutes of arrival, with an average time to antibiotics of 192 minutes.

Various studies have evaluated the adjunctive use of chemical and antimicrobial treatments to assist in the mechanical removal of oral microbial biofilm from tissue surfaces during scaling and root planning therapy (SRP). The current study demonstrates the elimination of two classes of surrogate molecular markers from periodontal disease sites. This suggests the current agent may be a more effective adjunctive cleansing agent for complete biofilm removal.

In the current study, the authors quantify the binding activity of particle-immobilized DNA aptamers to their nucleotide and non-nucleotide targets. For the purposes of this work, DNA and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) binding analysis was carried out for VEGF-binding aptamers and compared to that of an ampicillin-binding aptamer as well as a non-aptamer DNA probe. Binding analysis followed incubation of one target type, coincubation of both DNA and VEGF targets, and serial incubations of each target type.
