Species-level delineation of digenetic trematodes is complex and can be best achieved by integrative taxonomy using both genetic characterisation and morphological analysis. Two new Bucephalidae species of the genus Diesing, 1858 are described here based on specimens collected from the intestine of Jordan & Seale following this approach. Adults of n.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on new taxonomic features discovered in digenean species using advanced techniques like scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecular analysis.
  • Two trematode species were found in Lake Ol'Bolossat, Kenya, leading to detailed morphological examinations and new characteristics, including a unique unarmed cirrus.
  • Molecular analyses confirmed these species' identities and relationships within the Digenea subclass, providing the first mitochondrial DNA sequence for one species and expanding the geographical range of both parasites to Kenya.

Adult trematodes of Allocreadium Looss, 1900 (Digenea) infect the intestine of mostly freshwater fishes in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Americas. During routine parasitological surveys in the Vaal River system, adult trematodes were collected from the intestine of smallmouth yellowfish, Labeobarbus aeneus (Burchell). The trematodes were confirmed to represent a member of Allocreadium and did not match any existing taxon.

Parasites and environmental features could synergistically act as stressors to the health of their hosts. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of: (i) water quality, host sex, size and body condition on adult digenean parasite infections; (ii) digenean infections and host sex and size on the oxidative stress biomarkers and body condition of hosts; and (iii) water quality on the oxidative stress biomarkers and body condition in . Water quality variables were measured and were collected each month for a year for examination of two intestinal digeneans, and , and determination of body condition and measurement of biomarkers in the host.

The intestines of 154 Clarias gariepinus were examined of which 29 were naturally infected with Masenia nkomatiensis, and of these, seven (intensity ranging from 8 to 231) were examined for pathology. Destruction of the epithelium covering the villi, detachment of epithelial cells and parts of villi were observed. Excessive mucus secretion occurred in the vicinity of the worm and catarrh was observed, indicative of an inflammatory response.

A new species of Masenia Chatterji, 1933 is described based on material from the intestine of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell) in the Incomati River, Mozambique. The combination of morphological characteristics and analysis of 18S and 28S rDNA sequences delineated the specimens found in the present study as a distinct species. The new form is distinguished from other Masenia spp.

This study presents the helminthofauna of digenean parasites of Acestrorhynchus falcirostris in the state of Amazonas (Brazil). Eight species belonging to four families were recovered: Metacercariae of Austrodiplostomum compactum (Diplostomidae) and Clinostomum marginatum (Clinostomidae) and mature specimens of Bellumcorpus majus, Prosorhynchoides carvajali, Rhipidocotyle santanaensis (Bucephalidae); Prosthenhystera obesa (Callodistomidae); Genarchella genarchella (Derogenidae) and Phyllodistomum spatula (Gorgoderidae). Examining specimens belonging to the genus Bellumcorpus collected from A.
