Experiences of Sexual and Gender Minorities with Health Care in the Philippines: A Qualitative Study.

Background: There is limited availability and accessibility of health care facilities and services tailored to the specific health care needs of sexual and gender minorities (SGMs) in the Philippines.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe SGMs' experiences with health care services in the Philippines.

Methods: Using a phenomenological design, interviews were conducted with participants recruited online through SGM networks and organizations.

Cultural competence is significant in addressing the health needs of vulnerable populations. This study conducted psychometric testing of a cultural competency instrument in the Philippines. Brislin's translation and a cross-sectional online design were used.

Integration of Population Health, Social Determinants, and Social Justice in Transcultural Nursing and Culturally Competent Care: White Paper by the Scholars Education Interest Group.

Introduction: As part of its mission to advance Transcultural Nursing worldwide, the Transcultural Nursing Society Scholars upholds the central role of the discipline and cultural competence in advocacy, empowerment, and transformation of the life conditions of disadvantaged populations. This White Paper affirms the Scholars' core belief in the value of Transcultural Nursing and culturally competent care in addressing social determinants to promote health equity.

Methods: The Scholars Education Interest Group proposes recommendations for changes in education, practice, and research undergirding the discipline and expand cultural competence to directly address social structural and historical forces that perpetuate health vulnerability in diverse populations.

Experiences With a Postpartum mHealth Intervention During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Key Informant Interviews Among Patients, Health Care Providers, and Stakeholders.

Background: Maternal morbidity and mortality in the United States continue to be a worsening public health crisis, with persistent racial disparities among Black women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Innovations in mobile health (mHealth) technology are being developed as a strategy to connect birthing women to their health care providers during the first 6 weeks of the postpartum period.

Objective: This study aimed to inform a process to evaluate the barriers to mHealth implementation in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic by exploring the experiences of mothers and stakeholders who were directly involved in the pilot program.

Method: A sequential exploratory mixed design identified three constructs derived from the studies of Leininger and others. Constructs were compared with publications on cultural competency.

Significance of Home Visiting in Providing Care to Filipino Mothers and Their Infants During the Postpartum Period.

Introduction: Home visiting is recommended for mothers and young infants during the first week of life to provide needed support. This study describes the significance of home visiting in providing care to Filipino mothers and their infants during the postpartum period.

Methodology: Using a descriptive qualitative design, individual interviews were conducted with 10 mothers, four registered nurses, and five barangay health workers involved in home visits.

Utilizing a Mobile Health Intervention to Manage Hypertension in an Underserved Community.

This 6-month pilot randomized controlled trial examined the effectiveness of a Mobile Health (mHealth) intervention for hypertension self-monitoring and management in an underserved urban community. The four health outcomes measured included changes in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP), BP monitoring adherence, perceived medication adherence self-efficacy, and health-related quality of life. Thirty participants were randomly assigned to the mHealth group or a standard follow-up group; 25 participants completed the study.

An Ecological Approach Toward Prevention and Care of Victims of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking.

Sex trafficking is a widespread form of human trafficking that exists globally. The forced sexual exploitation of young women for profit at the hands of traffickers is a human rights violation. Sex trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery where youths are sold as a commodity.

Study Purpose: Describe practices of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) in assisting women in childbirth and the perceptions of TBAs by mothers and health professionals familiar with their work.

Methodology: Qualitative design using focus groups conducted in urban and rural settings in Sierra Leone. Separate audiotaped focus groups conducted for each group of participants lasting between 45 and 90 minutes.

A community survey on neighborhood violence, park use, and physical activity among urban youth.

Background: Neighborhoods can be an important feature of the built environment influencing physical activity; however, neighborhood poverty and violence may pose significant barriers for youth physical activity. We conducted a community survey of 107 households with youth 3-12 years of age in select neighborhoods of the city of Newark, New Jersey, a highly impoverished and racially/ethnically segregated city of the United States.

Results: The majority of sampled households did not have access to a park, and nearly 60% of youth were not engaged in a team or organized physical activity program.

Cultural Competency in Baccalaureate Nursing Education.

This article presents the work of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing Advisory Committee in developing an integrated curriculum for cultural competence in baccalaureate nursing education. Five competencies for Cultural Competency in Baccalaureate Nursing Education were developed with supporting rationale. Suggestions for developing and implementing curricula for cultural competency, teaching content, specific integrative learning strategies, methods for evaluating nursing students' cultural competence and recommendations for effective implementation of the integrated curriculum are presented.

Nursing care of vulnerable populations using a framework of cultural competence, social justice and human rights.

The article attempts to present a model linking cultural competence with advocacy for social justice and protection of human rights in caring for vulnerable groups such as refugees and asylum seekers. Using the human rights principle focuses the moral obligation to address social inequities and suffering of vulnerable populations. Cultural competent care and culturally-congruent actions place the universal principles of social justice and protection of human rights within the cultural contexts of people's lives and the environment in which they are situated.

Transcultural Nursing Society position statement on human rights.

In 2006, the Transcultural Nursing Society created a business plan with a firm commitment to social change and the support of human rights. One of the primary goals of the plan was to seek recognition from the United Nations as a Human Rights Organization. As a first step in articulating this goal, the board of trustees of TCNS tasked a small group of Transcultural Nursing Scholars to develop a position statement.

The relationship between cultural competence education and increasing diversity in nursing schools and practice settings.

This article attempted to examine the relationship between cultural competence education and increasing diversity in nursing schools and practice settings. In addition to the review of the literature, a panel of experts was interviewed regarding institutional practices in response to the challenge of increasing diversity and cultural competence education. Evidence of positive outcomes of cultural competent care and impact of race and ethnic concordance between patients and providers are presented.

Psychological and mental illness among elder immigrants from the former Soviet Union.

The study examined the cultural context of psychological illness among elder immigrants from the former Soviet Union (FSU). Kleinman's (1980) explanatory model of illness and Leininger's theory of culture care (1997) provided the conceptual framework for the study. Participant Observations were conducted in an Adult Day Care Center and Senior Housing.

Manifestation, attribution, and coping with depression among Asian Indians from the perspectives of health care practitioners.

The study explores cultural influences on depression and care outcomes among Asian Indians with depression. Data were collected from interviews of 23 multidisciplinary mental health professionals and retrospective review of 20 medical records of patients. Findings revealed a major influence of social and cultural context in expression of symptoms, illness attribution, help-seeking behaviors, and communication patterns.
