This study set out to uncover which interfacial properties have the greatest impact on membrane organic fouling, biofouling, and fouling resistance. A relatively simple manipulation of the basic equations used in determining Lifshitz-van der Waals (LW) and Lewis acid-base (AB) surface tensions for solid materials reveals that the high electron accepticity of water makes the electron donicity of membrane and biofouling materials the key component governing their interfacial free energy of adhesion (Δ), which defines the favorability (or unfavorability) of one material (1) adhering to another (2) when immersed in a liquid (3). Various biofoulant and membrane LW and AB surface tensions were systematically characterized.

For the past 30 years, thin-film membrane composites have been the state-of-the-art technology for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, and gas separation. However, traditional membrane casting techniques, such as phase inversion and interfacial polymerization, limit the types of material that are used for the membrane separation layer. Here, we describe a novel thin-film liftoff (T-FLO) technique that enables the fabrication of thin-film composite membranes with new materials for desalination, organic solvent nanofiltration, and gas separation.

Conjugated polyaniline has shown anticorrosive, hydrophilic, antibacterial, pH-responsive, and pseudocapacitive properties making it of interest in many fields. However, grafting of polyaniline without harsh chemical treatments is challenging. In this study, we report a simple, fast, and non-destructive surface modification method for grafting tetraaniline (TANI), the smallest conjugated repeat unit of polyaniline, onto several materials perfluorophenylazide photochemistry.

Hollow-structured nanomaterials are presented as an outstanding sensing platform because of their unique combination of high porosity in both the micro- and nanoscale, their biocompatibility, and flexible template applicability. Herein, we introduce a bacterial skeleton method allowing for cost-effective fabrication with nanoscale precision. As a proof-of-concept, we fabricated a hollow SnO hemipill network (HSHN) and a hollow Pt-functionalized SnO hemipill network (HPN).

Batch and column laboratory experiments were conducted on natural sediment and groundwater samples from a contaminated site in Maine, USA with the aim of lowering the dissolved arsenate [As(V)] concentrations through chemical enhancement of natural attenuation capacity. In batch factorial experiments, two levels of treatment for three parameters (pH, Ca, and Fe) were studied at different levels of phosphate to evaluate their impact on As(V) solubility. Results illustrated that lowering pH, adding Ca, and adding Fe significantly increased the sorption capacity of sediments.

Despite increasing use of nanotechnology in neuroscience, the characterization of interactions between magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and primary cortical neural networks remains underdeveloped. In particular, how the age of primary neural networks affects MNP uptake and endocytosis is critical when considering MNP-based therapies for age-related diseases. Here, primary cortical neural networks are cultured up to 4 weeks and with CCL11/eotaxin, an age-inducing chemokine, to create aged neural networks.
