The Pap smear is widely recognized in medicine as the single most successful contributor to cancer screening and preventative care. Women have Dr. George Papanicolaou (1870-1962) to thank for this groundbreaking contribution to their healthcare-a discovery that, fascinatingly, was made incidentally during his study of ovulation cycles in guinea pigs.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to estimate the prevalence and trends of congenital eye anomalies (CEAs) in Paris from 2010 to 2020, analyzing data from all maternity units in the area.
  • Out of 115 identified cases of CEAs, the overall prevalence was 4.1 cases per 10,000 births, with 23.5% being prenatally diagnosed.
  • It was found that CEAs were commonly associated with other anomalies, as 20.9% had genetic issues, and 53% had additional extraocular anomalies, with a lower prenatal detection rate for isolated CEAs at only 13.3%.

Cytoreductive surgery with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) is a treatment option for peritoneal metastases (PM) but is associated with significant postoperative morbidity. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic value of computed tomographic (CT)-measured sarcopenia on postoperative outcomes and survival in patients undergoing CRS-HIPEC for PM from various origins. A retrospective cohort study was conducted between 2012 and 2020.

Background: Myelomeningocele (MMC) is a spinal cord congenital defect that leads to paraplegia, sphincter disorders and potential neurocognitive disabilities. Prenatal surgery of MMC provides a significant benefit compared to surgery at birth. Mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) therapy as an adjuvant treatment for prenatal surgery showed promising results in animal experiments which could be considered for clinical use in human fetuses.

Introduction: Electronic influenza surveillance systems aid in health surveillance and clinical decision-making within the emergency department (ED). While major advances have been made in integrating clinical decision-making tools within the electronic health record (EHR), tools for sharing surveillance data are often piecemeal, with the need for data downloads and manual uploads to shared servers, delaying time from data acquisition to end-user. Real-time surveillance can help both clinicians and public health professionals recognize circulating influenza earlier in the season and provide ongoing situational awareness.

Background: Influenza causes significant morbidity and mortality in the United States. Among patients infected with influenza, the presence of bacterial co-infection is associated with worse clinical outcomes; less is known regarding the clinical importance of viral co-infections. The objective of this study was to determine rates of viral co-infections in emergency department (ED) patients with confirmed influenza and association of co-infection with disease severity.

To assess emergency department (ED) clinicians' perceptions of a novel real-time influenza surveillance system using a pre- and post-implementation structured survey. We created and implemented a laboratory-based real-time influenza surveillance system at two EDs at the beginning of the 2013-2014 influenza season. Patients with acute respiratory illness were tested for influenza using rapid PCR-based Cepheid Xpert Flu assay.

Background: Influenza B accounts for approximately one fourth of the seasonal influenza burden. However, research on the importance of influenza B has received less attention compared to influenza A. We sought to describe the association of both coinfections and comorbidities with disease severity among adults presenting to emergency departments (ED) with influenza B.

The 2014-15 influenza season saw the emergence of an H3N2 antigenic drift variant that formed the 3C.2a HA clade. Whole viral genomes were sequenced from nasopharyngeal swabs of ninety-four patients with confirmed influenza A virus infection and primary human nasal epithelial cell cultures used to efficiently isolate H3N2 viruses.

Background: Early intrauterine transfusion (IUT) is associated with a higher risk of fetal loss. Our objective was to evaluate the efficiciency of intravenous immunoglobulins (IVIG) to postpone the gestational age at first IUT beyond 20 weeks of gestation (WG) compared to the previous pregnancy in case of very severe red blood cell (RBC) alloimmunization.

Study Design And Methods: Very severe RBC alloimmunization was defined by a high titer of antibodies and a previous pregnancy complicated by a first IUT before 24 WG and/or perinatal death directly related to alloimmunization.

Background: Peramivir offers a single-dose intravenous (IV) treatment option for influenza (vs 5-day oral dosing for oseltamivir). We sought to compare outcomes of emergency department (ED) patients at high risk for influenza complications treated with IV peramivir vs oral oseltamivir.

Methods: During the 2015-16 and 2016-17 influenza seasons, adult patients in two US EDs were randomized to either oral oseltamivir or IV peramivir treatment group.

Objectives: In patients with N3 head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), N3 disease is associated with high regional relapse and metastatic risks. Patients with resectable N3 disease have better prognosis although their metastatic risk may be similar as in patients with unresectable disease. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has been associated with lower metastatic rates, but N3 patients may die of rapid locoregional progression.

Minimal invasive surgery and reconstructive surgery tend to become the standard in France in the management of head and neck tumors. The use of endoscopic approaches (through endoscopic endonasal/transoral approaches±robot-assisted) instead of open surgery and the use of reconstructive surgery using autologous (flaps) or heterologous materials aim to reduce surgical morbidity by making-up for the loss of substance to restore the function. The impact of these substantial changes in surgical techniques has not been assessed with respect to postoperative radiotherapy practice.

Background: The prognosis of advanced nodal (N3) squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (HNSCC) is poor. We investigated whether surgery or radiotherapy of early (T1-2) primary stage HSNCC is preferable to limit the overall morbidity after upfront neck dissection (uND) for N3 disease.

Methods: This retrospective multicentric Groupe d'Étude des Tumeurs de la Tête Et du Cou study included patients undergoing uND and surgery or radiotherapy of their primary.

Background: Since 1999, the US Food and Drug Administration approved neuraminidase and endonuclease inhibitors to treat uncomplicated outpatient influenza but not severe hospitalized influenza. After the 2009 pandemic, several influenza hospital-based clinical therapeutic trials were unsuccessful, possibly due to certain study factors. Therefore, in 2014, the US Health and Human Services agencies formed a Working Group (WG) to address related clinical challenges.

Research suggests gratitude benefits close relationships. However, relationships involve 2 people, and the interpersonal implications of mismatches in gratitude remain unclear. Is it sufficient for 1 partner to be high in gratitude, or does low gratitude in at least 1 partner act as a "weak link" that disrupts both partners' relational well-being? We asked both members of 120 newlywed couples to report their tendencies to feel and express gratitude for their partner every year for 2 years and their marital satisfaction every 4 months for 3 years.
