Environmental pollution incidents generate an emergency response from regulatory agencies to ensure that the impact on the environment is minimised. Knowing what pollutants are present provides important intelligence to assist in determining how to respond to the incident. However, responders are limited in their in-field capabilities to identify the pollutants present.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a common skin disease in children and young adults. In this report, we describe an unusual case of HS presenting as a mammillary fistula (MF) in a teenage female. A thorough dermatologic history and exam resulted in diagnosis of HS.

Evaluation of Antinuclear Antibody and Subserology Reflex Testing for the Diagnosis of Systemic Autoimmune Rheumatic Disorders in an Academic Teaching Hospital.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine appropriate utilization of antinuclear antibody (ANA) screening tests with follow-up subserology tests (reflex testing) for diagnosing systemic autoimmune rheumatic disorder (SARD).

Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 3003 SARD-test orders at an academic teaching hospital from January to December 2019. Testing patterns were categorized as American College of Rheumatology (ACR)-recommended reflex testing, panel testing, or single subserology testing.

Nonaccidental head injuries are significant causes of morbidity and mortality among young children. Despite broad agreement among medical experts, controversies remain over diagnostic criteria, including from autopsies, because of opinions expressed by a small group of expert witnesses who testify for defendants in suspected child homicide cases. We reviewed 249 autopsies in children 2 years old and younger from the files of our Medical Examiner office in the University of Missouri School of Medicine done between January 1, 2008 and December, 31, 2016.

Examining the Associations Between Parent Concerns and School-Age Children's Language and Reading Abilities: A Comparison of Samples Recruited for In-School Versus Online Participation.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between parent concerns about children's oral language, reading, and related skills and their children's performance on standardized assessments of language and reading, with a particular focus on whether those relationships differed between children recruited for in-school versus online participation.

Method: This study used data from a larger, longitudinal project focused on children with and without developmental language disorder (DLD) and/or dyslexia. The "in-school" sample ( = 133) completed assessments in-person before school closures, and the "online" sample ( = 84) recruited via advertisements completed assessments online.

Southwest Harvest for Health: An Adapted Mentored Vegetable Gardening Intervention for Cancer Survivors.

Harvest for Health is a home-based vegetable gardening intervention that pairs cancer survivors with Master Gardeners from the Cooperative Extension System. Initially developed and tested in Alabama, the program was adapted for the different climate, growing conditions, and population in New Mexico. This paper chronicles the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of "Southwest Harvest for Health".

Few diet and physical activity evidence-based interventions have been routinely used in community settings to achieve population health outcomes. Adapting interventions to fit the implementation context is important to achieve the desired results. Harvest for Health is a home-based vegetable gardening intervention that pairs cancer survivors with certified Master Gardeners from the Cooperative Extension Service with the ultimate goal of increasing vegetable consumption and physical activity, and improving physical functioning and health-related quality-of-life.

Herpes in the Heart: A Case of Widely Disseminated Intrauterine Herpes Simplex Virus Infection Involving Neonatal Myocardium in a 23-Week Gestationally Aged Neonate.

We report a rare case of disseminated herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection in an extremely preterm neonate. Herpes Simplex Virus-2 (HSV-2) is the leading cause of genital ulcer disease in adults and is the most common cause of neonatal herpes, a rare infection associated with long-term neurologic impairment and high mortality. HSV-2 can be transmitted perinatally via direct mucosal or skin contact.

The Effect of Vocabulary Intervention on Text Comprehension: Who Benefits?

Purpose Vocabulary intervention can improve comprehension of texts containing taught words, but it is unclear if all middle school readers get this benefit. This study tests 2 hypotheses about variables that predict response to vocabulary treatment on text comprehension: gains in vocabulary knowledge due to treatment and pretreatment reading comprehension scores. Method Students in Grade 6 ( = 23) completed a 5-session intervention based on robust vocabulary instruction (RVI).

Has Vocabulary Intervention Had an Effect? A Valid, Reliable, and (Fairly) Quick Outcome Measure for Semantic Knowledge.

Purpose Vocabulary intervention should be guided by information from outcome measures that demonstrate whether the student has grown in depth or breadth of understanding of the taught words. However, there is a paucity of tools, to measure depth of vocabulary knowledge, that are available for clinical use. Method The challenges of vocabulary measurement are summarized.

Introduction: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represents a heterogenous cluster of clinical phenotypes that are classically diagnosed by the time of adolescence. The possibility of late-life emergence of ASD has been poorly explored.

Methods: To more fully characterize the possibility of late-life emergence of behaviors characteristic of ASD in mild cognitive impairment and AD, we surveyed caregivers of 142 older persons with cognitive impairment from the University of Kentucky Alzheimer's Disease Center Longitudinal Cohort using the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale-2.

Introduction: Drowning deaths present a challenge for forensic pathologists, because the autopsy findings may occur in many nondrowning scenarios. Previous studies have attempted to identify patterns in organ weights that may be specific for drowning. The drowning index (DI) has been defined as the weight ratio of the lungs and pleural effusion fluid to the spleen.

Scope: This study examines to what extent plasma linoleic acid (LA) is modified by adiposity, and explores any association between plasma LA, demographics, dietary intakes, markers of metabolic health, and haplotypes of the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) 1/2 genes.

Methods And Results: A total of 820 participants with fasting blood samples from the Irish National Adult Nutrition Survey are studied. Plasma fatty acids are determined using GC-MS.

Cell line models of squamous epithelium (HET-1A) and BO (QH) were used to examine the effects of bile acids on cell adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins (Collagen, laminin, vitronectin, fibronectin) and expression of integrin ligands (α , α α , α and α ).

A novel treadmill protocol for exercise testing in children: the British Columbia Children's Hospital protocol.

Background: Exercise testing in children is widely recommended for a number of clinical and prescriptive reasons. Many institutions continue to use the Bruce protocol for treadmill testing; however, with its incremental changes in speed and grade, it has challenges for practical application in children. We have developed a novel institutional protocol (British Columbia Children's Hospital (BCCH)), which may have better utility in paediatric populations.

A Doppler Echocardiographic Study of the Myocardial Inotropic Response to Peak Semisupine Exercise in Healthy Children: Development of a Simplified Index of Myocardial Reserve.

Background: Stress echocardiography has been advocated for the detection of abnormal myocardial function and unmasking diminished myocardial reserve in pediatric patients. The aim of this study was to create a simplified index of myocardial reserve, derived from the myocardial inotropic response to peak semisupine exercise in healthy children, and illustrate its applicability in a sample of pediatric oncology patients.

Methods: In this prospective analysis, children (7-18 years of age) with normal cardiac structure and function performed semisupine stress echocardiography to volitional fatigue.

Metastasis is the leading cause of cancer related death and thus it is crucial that we improve our understanding of the mechanisms that promote this life-threatening phenomenon. Cell migration involves a complex, multistep process that leads to the actin-driven movement of cells on or through the tissues of the body.

Critical ethnography: An under-used research methodology in neuroscience nursing.

Critical ethnography is a qualitative research method that endeavours to explore and understand dominant discourses that are seen as being the 'right' way to think, see, talk about or enact a particular 'action' or situation in society and recommend ways to re-dress social power inequities. In health care, vulnerable populations, including many individuals who have experienced neurological illnesses or injuries that leave them susceptible to the influence of others, would be suitable groups for study using critical ethnography methodology. Critical ethnography has also been used to study workplace culture.

Plasma fatty acid patterns reflect dietary habits and metabolic health: A cross-sectional study.

Scope: Using pattern analysis, we investigated the relationship between plasma fatty acid patterns, dietary intake, and biomarkers of metabolic health using data from the Irish National Adult Nutrition Survey.

Methods And Results: Plasma fatty acid patterns were derived from 26 plasma fatty acids using k-means cluster analysis. Four clusters were identified, each with a distinct fatty acid profile.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate habitual vitamin E intake and plasma α-tocopherol concentration and their relationship with plasma fatty acid profile in a healthy adult population.

Methods: Vitamin E and fatty acid intake data were determined from the National Adult Nutrition Survey. Plasma α- and γ-tocopherol concentrations were quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography and the percentage of fatty acids in plasma by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.

Seeding of the rectus sheath with hepatocellular carcinoma after image guided percutaneous liver biopsy using coaxial biopsy needle system.

Needle track seeding following image guided needle biopsy is a known but uncommon complication in the workup of hepatocellular carcinoma. We present the case of a 55 year-old male who was found to have a recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma in the rectus sheath five years following a CT guided biopsy with the biopsy needle passing through the anterior abdominal wall muscles.
