Introduction: Rhizarthrosis, or osteoarthritis of the trapeziometacarpal joint, predominantly affects women over 50, with up to 30% experiencing some degree of arthritis in this joint. Traditional surgical approaches, such as trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction, can result in some patients in persistent pain or limited functionality. TMC ball-in-socket arthroplasty, with a cup placed in the distal scaphoid, offers a promising alternative to traditional arthrodesis or resection-suspension arthroplasty.

Radiographic evaluation of trapeziometacarpal total joint arthroplasty: Why and how?

Background: The role of the anconeus epitrochlearis (AE) in cubital tunnel syndrome, either as protector or potential compressor of the ulnar nerve, as well as its prevalence in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients are still unclear. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of the AE in a large cohort using 3-dimensional imaging and to investigate any association of the AE with preoperative or postoperative features of patients undergoing cubital tunnel surgery.

Methods: From a database of 1240 elbow MRIs, all patients with an AE were retrospectively screened for major criteria of cubital tunnel syndrome.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the anatomy of the trapezium with regard to cup position in trapeziometacarpal replacement and identify those trapeziums that are at risk of cup perforation through the trapezoid articular surface. The width of the proximal and distal articular surface and the height of the trapezium and second metacarpal facet were measured on 96 peritrapezial views reconstructed from computed tomography scans. The trapezoid articular surface of the trapezium (TRAST) angle was calculated, and four different cup designs were virtually positioned centrally in the trapezium and parallel to the proximal articular surface.

Perioperative steroid injection in elbow arthroscopy.

The goal of the present study was to evaluate the incidence of infection after perioperative intra-articular steroid injection during elbow arthroscopy. Starting from May 2019, we prospectively included all patients that underwent an elbow arthroscopy for various indications. All patients received preoperative antibiotics intravenously and a corticosteroid injection immediately after portal closure.

We present a case of fracture of the polyethylene liner of a dual-mobility trapeziometacarpal total joint arthroplasty. Standard radiographic imaging was normal. This case highlights the importance of dynamic radiographic imaging to make a timely diagnosis.

Minimally invasive corrective derotational osteotomy for proximal phalanx malrotation.

We investigated whether trapezium bone reaction was different following implantation of a trapeziometacarpal total joint replacement with a hemispheric or a conical cup. Fifty-three Keri Medical Touch implants with hemispheric cup and 53 with conical cup were prospectively followed up radiographically. We compared radiographs taken immediately and one year after surgery for cup subsidence, tilt, heterotopic ossification and loosening.

Total joint replacement for osteoarthritis of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb: why and how?

Total joint replacement has certain advantages over other surgical treatment methods for osteoarthritis of the thumb carpometacarpal joint, including restoration of thumb length and alignment, good cosmetical result, fast recovery of hand function and prevention of iatrogenic complications at neighbouring joints.
