While COVID-19 vaccines are generally very safe, the risks of myocarditis and pericarditis has been established following mRNA vaccines, with the highest risk in young males. Most systematic reviews and meta-analyses of the risk of myocarditis or pericarditis have included passive surveillance data, which is subject to reporting errors. Accurate measures of age-, sex-, vaccine dose-, and vaccine type-specific risks are crucial for assessment of the benefits and risks of the vaccination.

Objectives: Health systems are increasingly accountable for patients and require accurate electronic health record (EHR) vital status. We recently demonstrated that 19% of seriously ill primary care patients in one system were not marked dead in the EHR and 80% of these decedents had an encounter or appointment outstanding after death. Herein we describe the mechanism of identifying decedents whose death is not captured at the level of the EHR, characterize these decedents, and describe medications refilled after death.

Established research supports collaborative patient-clinician communication as a means of improving pain management and decreasing opioid use by patients with chronic pain. However, much of this scholarship emphasises clinicians' capacities to shape and improve communication; limited research investigates patients' roles in this process. Drawing on 40 ethnographic observations of patient-clinician interactions, clinical spaces and case conferences within one specialist pain clinic in Brisbane, Australia, this paper investigates how and why patients present themselves in particular ways within consultations.

Objective: To identify knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs (KABs) associated with COVID-19 vaccination intentions and assess the impact of vaccine-promoting messages on vaccination intentions.

Methods: Our nationally representative survey measured KABs of COVID-19 vaccination and incorporated a randomized experiment to assess the impact of different framing messages for a video encouraging vaccination intentions among unvaccinated adults in the US. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression models were fitted to investigate the relationships of KABs, trust in public health authorities (PHAs), and vaccine confidence with vaccination intentions.

Background: There is no risk and benefit assessment of COVID-19 vaccination for children younger than 5 years using a single health outcomes scale. The objective of this study is to compare the expected risk and benefits of the mRNA primary series of COVID-19 vaccines for children aged 6 months to 4 years in the United States using a single health outcome scale in the Omicron era.

Methods: The expected benefits and risks of the primary two-dose series of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines for children aged 6 months to 4 years were stratified by sex, the presence of underlying medical conditions, the presence of infection-induced immunity, and the type of mRNA vaccine (BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273).

Mate wareware (dementia) is a complex disease of the brain that progressively inhibits memory and cognitive ability, affecting many Māori (the Indigenous people of Aotearoa New Zealand) kaumātua (elderly persons) in Aotearoa (New Zealand). Mate wareware care aims to protect and sustain wellbeing, yet Māori perspectives of wellbeing that consider wairuatanga (Māori spirituality) are often neglected within current treatment planning. This study investigates the presence of wairuatanga within kaumātua lives, drawing upon 61 interviews with kaumātua to glean a Māori understanding of mate wareware and to develop a diagnostic screening tool for mate wareware.

Few analyses of COVID-19 vaccine attitudes also cover routine vaccines or focus on parents. In this cross-sectional study, we surveyed US adults in September 2022, immediately following the authorization of updated bivalent COVID-19 boosters for adults but before their authorization for children. The vaccine attitudes of parents were compared to other adults.

This was a phase I, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, ascending single- and multiple-dose study of oral ceftibuten to describe the pharmacokinetics (PK) of ceftibuten (administered form) and ceftibuten (metabolite), and to describe safety and tolerability at higher than licensed doses. Subjects received single 400, 600, or 800 mg doses of ceftibuten on Days 1 and 4, followed by 7 days of twice-daily dosing from Days 4 to 10. Non-compartmental methods were used to describe parent drug and metabolite PK in plasma and urine.

Aim: Mate wareware (dementia) presents a significant social and economic burden for Māori in Aotearoa New Zealand. Previous literature has highlighted the need to improve health literacy for Māori regarding the causes and management of mate wareware, yet there is a lack of Māori-centred educational resources. It was determined that a mobile phone application (app) could meet this need and that early consultation with Māori was required to ensure the digital solution would be culturally safe and relevant.

Transfer of autologous tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) to patients with refractory melanoma has shown clinical efficacy in a number of trials. However, extending the clinical benefit to patients with other cancers poses a challenge. Inefficient costimulation in the tumor microenvironment can lead to T cell anergy and exhaustion resulting in poor anti-tumor activity.

There are few issues that have been as vexing for the Australian healthcare community as the Australian governments policy of mandatory, indefinite, immigration detention. While many concepts have been used to begin to describe the many dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals and their resolution, they are limited, perhaps most fundamentally by the fact that immigration detention is antithetical to health and wellbeing. Furthermore, and while most advice recognises that the abolition of detention is the only option in overcoming these issues, it provides little guidance on how action within detention could contribute to this.

Recently, several β-lactam (BL)/β-lactamase inhibitor (BLI) combinations have entered clinical testing or have been marketed for use, but limited direct comparative studies of their activity exist. Xeruborbactam (XER, also known as QPX7728), which is undergoing clinical development, is a cyclic boronate BLI with potent inhibitory activity against serine (serine β-lactamase) and metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs). The objectives of this study were (i) to compare the potency and spectrum of β-lactamase inhibition by various BLIs in biochemical assays using purified β-lactamases and in microbiological assays using the panel of laboratory strains expressing diverse serine and metallo-β-lactamases and (ii) to compare the potency of XER in combination with multiple β-lactam antibiotics to that of other BL/BLI combinations in head-to-head testing against recent isolates of carbapenem-resistant (CRE).

The program is a popular and easy-to-use crystallography tool for indexing and simulating X-ray Laue patterns, but its previous versions lack search functions for recognizing Laue patterns taken from crystals with unknown orientations. To overcome this obstacle, a major upgrade of the program, called , is presented with three robust search schemes implemented: (i) crystal rotation along a single diffraction vector, (ii) a look-up method to search for reflection pairs matching the interplanar angle of two selected diffraction spots, and (iii) a more efficient look-up scheme to search for reflection triplets matching three interplanar angles. Extensive tests show that all these schemes, together with the convenient graphical user interfaces and highly optimized computing algorithms, are reliable and powerful for recognizing and fitting Laue patterns of any crystal taken under any diffraction geometry.

Article Synopsis
  • Vaccine hesitancy is a significant obstacle in controlling COVID-19 and other vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • A study evaluated the effectiveness of informational videos about the COVID-19 vaccine by varying the source's race/ethnicity and the sequence of personal narratives addressing vaccine concerns.
  • Results showed that participants who watched a personal story before the informational video were much more likely to view the entire video, and those who identified with the source's race/ethnicity had an even higher likelihood of engagement, indicating that personalized and relatable messaging can enhance vaccine message receptiveness.

Taniborbactam and xeruborbactam are dual serine-/metallo-beta-lactamase inhibitors (BLIs) based on a cyclic boronic acid pharmacophore that undergo clinical development. Recent report demonstrated that New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase (NDM)-9 (differs from NDM-1 by a single amino acid substitution, E152K, evolved to overcome Zn (II) deprivation) is resistant to inhibition by taniborbactam constituting pre-existing taniborbactam resistance mechanism. Using microbiological and biochemical experiments, we show that xeruborbactam is capable of inhibiting NDM-9 and propose the structural basis for differences between two BLIs.
