Introduction: The European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP2) defines sarcopenia as a muscle disease (muscle failure) rooted in adverse muscle changes that accrue across a lifetime; sarcopenia is common among adults of older age. New findings on the hormonal and metabolic characteristics of patients with sarcopenia have aided in developing more targeted therapeutic strategies. However, treating older patients with sarcopenia still poses a number of challenges.

Searching for aging key points is one of the main problems in geriatrics. More and more research in recent years has been devoted to the study of geroprotective mechanisms, the impact of various conditions and diseases on aging in general. Of particular importance is the determination of age-related involutive processes in the human body, whether they are part of normal aging or a condition that needs to be corrected to improve the functioning of organs and systems.

Article Synopsis
  • The review aimed to assess the connection between osteoarthritis (OA) and cardiovascular diseases (CVD), focusing on their risk factors, underlying mechanisms, and the role of chronic pain in this relationship.
  • It emphasized the importance of conducting more clinical and observational studies on the efficacy and safety of chondroitin sulfate (CS), particularly its parenteral form (Chondroguard), for patients suffering from chronic pain due to OA and CVD.
  • Additionally, the review called for improved clinical guidelines for treating chronic pain in OA patients at risk for CVD, highlighting the need for strategies that enhance mobility and integrate disease-modifying osteoarthritis drugs (DMOADs) into treatment plans.

The effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and clusters of its components on central blood pressure (CBP) has not been well characterized. We aimed to describe the effect of MetS and clusters of its components on CBP in a large population and to identify whether this effect differs in men and women. We studied 15,609 volunteers (43% women) from 10 cohorts worldwide who participated in the Metabolic syndrome and Artery REsearch Consortium.

Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) is a common carbohydrate metabolism disorder world-wide. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 12-week Subetta therapy in correcting 2-h plasma glucose in patients with IGT, a multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial was performed. Derived by technological treatment of antibodies to insulin receptor β-subunit and endothelial NO synthase, Subetta increases the sensitivity of insulin receptors by activating the insulin signaling pathway.

Purpose: To compare the effect of 12 months of treatment with moxonidine or bisoprolol on telomerase activity (TA) and parameters characterizing the arterial wall state in postmenopausal women with arterial hypertension (AH) and osteopenia.

Methods: An open-label randomized study with 114 postmenopausal women with hypertension and osteopenia; pulse wave velocity (PWV), intima-media thickness (IMT), and TA were analyzed initially and after 12 months of therapy with moxonidine (n = 57) or bisoprolol (n = 57).

Results: Both medications effectively lowered blood pressure (BP) in both groups.

Background: Insulin resistance accelerates the aging process, but its speed depends on the individual characteristics of the metabolism. One of the reasons for the different aging rates in individuals with insulin resistance is the initially different "genetic protection" of cells, which many scientists associate with replicative cellular aging.

Aims: to study the relationship between the state of carbohydrate metabolism and markers of replicative cell aging in individuals with different sensitivity to insulin.

BACKGROUND Primary hyperparathyroidism is most common in women during the menopause and its occurrence in pregnant women is rare. However, because neonatal mortality is associated with maternal hyperparathyroidism, early diagnosis is essential. This report describes the case of a late diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism in a 28-year-old pregnant woman and describes the effects on the mother and neonate.

Increased arterial stiffness (AS), intima-media thickness (IMT), and the presence of atherosclerotic plaques (PP) have been considered as important aspects of vascular aging. It is well documented that the cardiovascular system is an important target organ for growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 in humans, and GH /IGF-1 deficiency significantly increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The telomere length of peripheral blood leukocytes (LTL) is a biomarker of cellular senescence and that has been proposed as an independent predictor of (CVD).

Effective control of arterial pressure (AP) is achieved only in ⅓ of patients with arterial hypertension. It is especially difficult to achieve control of systolic (S) AP in elderly patients in whom SAP is the strongest prognostic factor of cardiovascular complications. Thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics and calcium antagonists are effective for lowering of elevated SAP and pulse (P) AP including aortic PAP elevation of which is associated with high stiffness of arterial wall and is typical for elderly people.

Telomerase activity (TA) is considered as the biomarker for cardiovascular aging and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Recent studies suggest a link between statins and telomere biology that may be explained by anti-inflammatory actions of statins and their positive effect on TA. Until now, this effect has not been investigated in prospective randomized studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Most individuals over 60 experience some renal function decline, influenced by factors like chronic inflammation and telomere shortening.
  • A study involving 253 patients (average age 51.5) explored the relationship between renal function, leukocyte telomere length, and inflammation markers in those without chronic kidney or cardiovascular diseases.
  • Results indicated a significant link between albuminuria levels and telomere length, as well as inflammation markers like C-reactive protein and fibrinogen, suggesting that albuminuria could serve as a marker for cellular aging and a focus for preventing further kidney function decline.

Background: Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress might be considered the key mechanisms of aging. Insulin resistance (IR) is a phenomenon related to inflammatory and oxidative stress. We tested the hypothesis that IR may be associated with cellular senescence, as measured by leukocyte telomere length (LTL), and arterial stiffness (core feature of arterial aging), as measured by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (c-f PWV).
