Introduction: Women with early bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) have greater Alzheimer's disease (AD) risk than women with spontaneous menopause (SM), but the pathway toward this risk is understudied. Considering associative memory deficits may reflect early signs of AD, we studied how BSO affected brain activity underlying associative memory.

The amyloid precursor protein (APP) is a key protein in Alzheimer's disease synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and translocated to the plasma membrane where it undergoes proteolytic cleavages by several proteases. Conversely, to other known proteases, we previously elucidated rhomboid protease RHBDL4 as a novel APP processing enzyme where several cleavages likely occur already in the ER. Interestingly, the pattern of RHBDL4-derived large APP C-terminal fragments resembles those generated by the η-secretase or MT5-MMP, which was described to generate so-called Aη fragments.

We report spontaneous oscillations of circular hydraulic jumps created by the impact of a submillimeter water jet on a solid disk. The jet flow rate is shown to condition the occurrence of the oscillations while their period is independent of this parameter. The period, however, varies linearly with the disk radius.

Patient-derived organoids from induced pluripotent stem cells have emerged as a model for studying human diseases beyond conventional two-dimensional (2D) cell culture. Briefly, these three-dimensional organoids are highly complex, capable of self-organizing, recapitulate cellular architecture, and have the potential to model diseases in complex organs, such as the brain. Shadoo and PrP belongs to the same protein family, whose biological function remains poorly understood. Previous experiments reported potential functional redundancies or antagonisms between these two proteins, depending on the tissue analysed. This study explored smoldering combustion for remediating polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS)-impacted granular activated carbon (GAC) and PFAS-contaminated soil. GAC, both fresh and PFAS-loaded, was employed as the supplemental fuel supporting smoldering in mixtures with sand (≈175 mg PFAS/kg GAC-sand), with PFAS-spiked, laboratory-constructed soil (≈4 mg PFAS/kg soil), and with a PFAS-impacted field soil (≈0.2 mg PFAS/kg soil).
